Question about fog/winter riding

I've lived in northern California for about 5 years now, but this is my first year as a bike commuter and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or recommendations on riding in fog (other than don't do it-lol)?

I live in a small town between Stockton and Modesto and in the winter the fog rolls into the valley thick and heavy. My job starts at 7am and at that time its still pretty dark (which doesn't bother me) but it can be so foggy that even the streetlights are barely visible. Common sense says not to bike on those days but, how about days when the fog is not as bad? What lights have you found to be best under those conditions? Not really wanting to give commuting up for the winter but everyone seems to be cautioning me about the fog (which I already know can be bad). Driving really isnt any better so I want to bike as much as I can but I want to do it safely.

Hi Medianox,

Having been in that tule fog more often than I'd like, I'd probably suggest that unless its very light that you not commute on those days. I remember one time it was so bad I had to drive w/my car door open so I could look down and watch the center line Not sure I'd want to be riding a bike on a day like that!

I'm pretty close to you, maybe we could do a ride some weekend... I'm way outa shape but working on getting back into the swing of things!

That pretty much what I'm figuring....I'd rather give up a day of riding than end up squished.

You probably do live pretty close...I've been trying to find new places/routes to ride (not good at hills yet-need practice! lol) sounds like fun to me.

"sun"glasses with clear or yellow lenses.

Otherwise, just dress as if it was a light sprinkle of rain. Water resistant rather than waterproof does the trick for me.
