Yep, that's the primary reason why I don't do the big rides that attract a lot of people (charity rides and the like) anymore. Way too many people who have nary a clue. It's not worth the stress.
I'd just as soon donate to others' fundraising efforts, or volunteer my time.
For instance, snapdragen, BikerZ, aka_kim and I helped run a rest stop for the Waves to Wine MS ride this past weekend.
