Yea, I'm thinking about it a little more seriously now. I think being chased pretty good earlier in the ride helped my cautiousness. With the first chase, I didn't have time to grab anything, however. The farmhouse they sprang from was too close to the road. I didn't even have time to grab my usual defense, my water bottle. Still had my lungs, though!

Thanks for that Bikemomma - it would be nice to have something to deter those pesky and dangerous dogs but I would probably spray myself in the Adrenalin rush.

I have often turned back on a road when seeing a dog sort of waiting up ahead it really spookes me.

Do the airhorn things work in deterring dogs? I think Emily mentioned having one on her bike now.

Me too. I'm a klutz. I can't even handle a camera on a bike (Jobob does it expertly!).

I don't know...I've never used one. But I imagine it would scare the bejiggers out of them...until they learn better. I 'spose you couldn't use it on the same dogs too many times.

(sorry again for the off-topic discussion here)

I've gotten to use it a few times now, and it does help. It mostly just startles them and can stop them in their tracks, giving you some valuable time to make your getaway. It's not a failsafe as nothing is, but it's just that little extra protection that makes me feel a bit safer out there. It's loud enough that it would also help with motorists if someone doesn't see you, but I haven't had to put it to use for that yet.

Happy to help! I got it from Nashbar (note that it is not in the printed catalog; I had to do a search on nashbar.com) and the brand name is Air Zound. If Nashbar no longer carries them, google on Air Zound, and you should find additional sources.

    Premier membership

Just a note that the polka dot premier member jersey is no longer showing. Only 35 of the 73 members have paid their $10 to support slantz's hard work and the purchase of the new server. There are no ads on that site only the stupendous unpaid labor of one guy. Sprint back to the mountain top, girls!

    Hey hey!

74 925 miles so far, only 75 to go to reach our objectives.

    Who'll get at 75 000 first?

so nuttie - you keeping the goal at 75,000 just to see how far past it we go??
maybe up it to 100,00 for 2006?

I gotta tell ya'll...you ladies ROCK! 75,000 miles just blows my mind!! and humbles me that I was a part of it in some small way.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"
