    Update to Christmas Eve crash!

Just thought I would touch base and see how everyone was travelling.

I am still not back on the bike after my Christmas Eve crash - but I am getting to the stage of thinking about cycling again. But after taking my bike to my LBS to get checked out, I have found out the frame was bent in the crash and a new bike is in order. So I have put in an insurance claim for a new bike now too.

As regards injuries, I am pretty good now although I still don't have full movement in left arm/shoulder. Unfortunately, choosing to crash on Christmas Eve seems to have meant that not close enough attention was paid at the hospital to the bone breaks and what should have been pinned straight away wasn't. The latest CT scan taken about a month ago shows that at last enough bone has grown back between the broken collarbone pieces that it has finally joined. Although I can still feel it grating when I go walking (yeughhh).

Some of you may remember how I had to relocate interstate so that Mum and Dad could look after me as I was pretty immobile. Well, a funny afterword on that is that my Dad was so enthused by bicycle talk etc when I was with him that he has bought himself a new bike and now rides about 10kms every afternoon (Dad is 77).

I enjoy reading all your discussion on so many different things and even though it might be a while yet before I am back cycling, your enthusiasm stops me giving up cycling altogether.

    Best wishes to all!

    Jaydeeeeeee!!! Howdy stranger! *waves*

oo..A new bike! I hope you can get back to riding soon. Remember to take it slowly! If you lived closer, i'd give you the exercise bike we have(i bought a second hand one after i had my off).

I understand that getting back on the bike might be a bit frightening at first but with time, you'll regain some sort of trust for the road. (psst..why not become a mtn biker..you don't have to worry about cars..just trees that don't move )

Good to hear your dad started cycling! Your folks live in a good sunny place to do it

    Take care

    Hi,

Sounds like your crash was bit more than you thought... I guess the good thing is your father is riding at 77 Wow how cool is that!!

I was told it would take 6-9 month for my broken clavicle to heal so just be patient. Well there isn't much we can do right? Even after the bone mends, it will be a while before it really feels solid. so putz on around for bit longer. and wish you a proper recovery.

Hi Jaydee - sorry it's taking so long for you to heal, but sounds like you're keeping a positive attitude, which is great! Sending my best wishes that you're back to 100% and riding with your dad soon.

Glad to hear you haven't abandoned cycling- most people assume that you will after a serious injury.

Make sure you keep on your PT and look at accupuncture, sports massage etc. My shoulder injury was over a year ago and I still have at least 6 months more PT to go- shoulders take time.

As for getting back on the bike. I made sure I rode rides with very little downhills (I crashed downhill) and on routes I felt comforatble doing. Make sure you start short and build up as it is amazing how much your shoulder is involved in cycling. And its OK to be scared, time and more cycling will take care of that.

Way to go for your Dad- most parents would be saying "cycling is dangerous" after seeing you hurt but you must have a great Dad who can see accidents are just that, accidents and can happen to everyone.
