This evening I was riding my bike near Taco Bell and a guy was leaving and he was stopped was waiting to pull out into traffic. I thought he would wait but instead we both ended up moving at the same time and he knocked me over. I got bumped up pretty good on my left leg and my right knee is scraped and swollen a bit. My left hand is sore from absorbing the impact of the fall. The only damage to the bike was that chain got knocked off and the back tire is out of true. I was able to ride my bike home. I was so embarrassed and felt like an idiot for not waiting for him to go first. Several people did ask me if I was alright.
Need some tips to deal with the bumps.
Also how do bike shops charge for trueing up a wheel?

What a bummer! Glad it was pretty minor and that the damage to both you and the bike was not too bad. As far as dealing with the bumps, icing the areas that are banged up will help with pain and swelling; if the pain is really bad you could take some ibuprofen or Tylenol if needed. For the road rash, make sure it's clean and then bandage it up since wounds heal best when kept moist and covered. If you have some Neosporin or something similar it's not a bad idea to put some on. I don't have any idea how much the shops charge for trueing a wheel; the best bet would be to call a few in your area and find out. Hope you feel better soon and that this doesn't stop you from getting back on the bike once you're up to it!

Not much road rash, just a large bump on left shin. I will keep riding but a lot more cautiously.

Very sorry you were in a crash, and grateful it wasn't worse!

If you were riding by the Taco Bell and he was waiting to pull out into traffic, YOU had right of way. YOU are traffic! Don't feel like an idiot!

You mention several people stopped and asked if you were ok. Did the driver stop?

Ice the area, that should help. I had a pretty bad fall about 6 weeks ago and had a large bruise and bump, then the pain set in. I iced my leg and when I was not a work I tried to keep my leg elevated. Good luck to you.

I don't think he saw me, but he check on me after the crash.

    Here are some pics

You can't tell in the pic but the top of the knee is swollen. Legs need more padding in front of the shin bone, all the padding is in the back with the muscle. I know my shin often gets bumps from shopping carts at my job gathering them up. My hand is only a little scrapped up but the part just the wrist where the cushion is is sore, right in the middle. I am wearing an ace bandage for support.

They do. And if you or anyone there got his plates or id etc the driver and his insurance should pay.

I wasn't here, did not see it but based on what you're telling me: driver pulling out and hitting oncoming traffic (you) he would be at fault same as if he hit a car for your bike and or any medical.

I'm sorry that you got hit.

    Ow! Heal fast, kay?

My LBS charges $15 to true a wheel, but I second the suggestion to call shops.

RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) for the sore ankle. Neosporin and a light bandage for the road rash. And hugs all around...

As for the whomped-up wheel, you/they will first need to check if the rim has been bent or warped. If so, that will need to br replaced and the wheel rebuilt. Otherwise it's a matter of a little time with the truing stand.

    Hope you're much better soon...

I found out today that my crash is going to cost me over eighty dollars. The lbs said I needed a new rim which costs sixty-five dollars plus twenty dollars for labor. One stupid lapse in judgment.

My initial injuries to the shin bone, knee and hand are healing but now my neck and upper arms are sore.

Glad to know you're okay. Even though the accident was minor, I'm sure it was very frightening!

Take care and get back in the saddle soon!

Since the accident was the driver's fault, his insurance will pay for the bike repair and any medical bills you may have.

I'm sorry about your accident You have no reason at all to feel like an idiot, but I do understand the impulse to be embarrassed when you crash or fall. Few people truly take these events in stride!

    Hope you feel better soon.
