Ottawa has a Huge series of paved cycle paths. From today's paper-the focus is on the place where this poor woman was murdered--but the info does apply to other parts of the system.

Women who walk, bike and jog along the path where Ardeth Wood was murdered more than two years ago are finally feeling safer.
A day after 25-year-old Chris Myers was arrested and charged with Ardeth's murder, women who use the east-end path close to where the 27-year-old university student's body was found expressed their sense of relief.
"My feeling is that there has been a tremendous weight lifted off our shoulders," said Joan Banks, who was out for a late morning walk yesterday with her husband and visiting friends.
"The air has cleared a little and I feel a lot safer."
Banks walks the area about a half-dozen times a year. Since Ardeth's murder, she hadn't felt a sense of security along the path.
Libby Dupuis said she has always felt safe walking the path along the shore of the Ottawa River with her dog, but felt reassured when she heard someone had been arrested.
"I've always felt pretty safe walking along here, but sometimes your mind wanders and you think, 'What if?' But I think it's safe. Especially now," she said.
While Banks is pleased the arrest is helping women feel more comfortable on the path, she's also hopeful they will remain vigilant in protecting themselves -- and that others continue to help ensure their safety.
"I hope they keep the patrols up. That would be nice."
