It was my goal to complete a sprint tri before my 46 birthday and I did it on Aug 1rst. I turned 46 on Aug 2! I loved it. I also placed 2nd in my age group. Thank goodness for small town local events! It sure helps to get you hooked! I laughed when I had read Alex's post because she was writing my story! I have run long distance and biked for years and so I am stepping into new territory and learning the sport of swimming.

My next Sprint Tri is Aug 15th and it is an open water swim. I'll let you know how it goes! Good luck to all of you in your events!

    Congrats Anita!!!!
What an excellent way to celebrate your 46th birthday. You placed 2nd in your AG? What a great way to enter the sport! I'm sure your next tri will be just as fun- if not MORE fun!

    Congrats! And Happy Birthday.

My first tri, also a sprint, was when I was 46. It's a great age to try new things!

    Thanks Everyone,
I have really enjoyed reading all of your posts and was encouraged but all that you have accomplished.

Alex, it was a pool tri with a distance of 500 yds. The event next saturday is an open water and is 800 yds. I have met you Alex, and you are a strong women in both spirit and physical abilitiy. You are going to do amazing! Just relax and enjoy!
I have had friends who have practiced openwater swimming with me and loaned me a a wetsuit. But the swim is my weakest sport and I have a long way to go. My goal this year is to enjoy and try not to put pressure on myself. I needed a change in my life and was not enjoying running 1/2 marathons anymore. So this has been so fun. I am hoping next year I can bump it up to the next level.

Cool Anita! I am 46 also and there is no way I will place in my first tri next month! I started swimming two years ago because of a back injury, and was able to find a friend to swim with who does triathlons. I have never competed at any sport, just MTB'ed for fun for a few years prior. At the point that I was able to swim a mile I thought, "Maybe I could do a tri someday"- my goal was age 50, not knowing if I could ever get on my bike again let alone learn how to run. I started road riding with the same friend in January this year and got hooked!

My friend told me about the sprint coming up- and I didn't even hesitate to sign up. Last week I started an 8 week to 5K program. Just put on the ipod and follow the instructions. I have never run more than a mile in my life and that was probably in high school for a stupid PE test.

So now, crazy it seems, I want to aim for an Olympic next year, and who knows, maybe by 50 I'll do a HIM. Wouldn't that be awesome!

Keep at it, and congratulations! Keep us posted.

Congratulations! Sounds like you will enjoy all the new challenges this sport will offer you!

    Good luck this coming weekend!

So is 46 "THE AGE" for first triathlons?
I am 45, but my "end of the year" age is 46. I'll have my race report in Sept.
I'm off to the pool tonight, next week I'll do my first OW swim in preparation. I am pretty darn scared of the swim. I figure it may take me 1/2 hour, but I can doggie paddle or back stroke if I have to!
I don't expect to place. I even entered as a novice.

And now for the CONGRATS! So you are doing 2 tri's this summer? Cool!
And to place--WOW. Even if it is a small size it doesn't matter you came in 2nd in your age group--AWESOME!
