multiple bike storage?

wow! i'd better call my insurace company back and double check that! i know they have to be locked when on the truck or in the car (well.. the car locked then the bike is in it)... but when they said "if it's stolen from the garage" they didn't say they had to be locked in the garage.. i mean.. the garage door is down (thus locked unless you have the opener)... so to me it's just the same as being in the house! i wouldn't lock them if they were in a room in the house! i'd better varify that!

There's a pretty good chance you have a better and more comprehensive insurance policy than I do.

but better to be safe than sorry! so i'm gonna re-call them (i called to specifically make sure the bikes... specifically hubby's new carbon one) is covered at and away from home... but i want to bring up the locked now! you've made me nervous! lol!

We've got most of ours (8) hanging from hooks from the garage ceiling. The hoods of the cars fit under them so the garage is still usable. We put the most commonly used ones where they are easiest to reach but all are accessible. 2 are against the garage wall and 2 are in the shed. Our garage faces our back yard so passersby can't see what we've got.

bouncy bouncy's picture is much like what we did....hooks on 2 x 8's , with a 2 x 8 for the bottom wheel to rest on. We used the leanardo hook

We've got 4 against one wall, plus 2 on the support post, which only leaves one without a permanent home, and it sits in the Park bike stand. Oh, yeah, and our house has NEVER been that tidy!!

What I like: The bikes don't sit on the floor at all, and they don't take up a lot of space into the room...and I can reach any of the bikes, even though I'm super short.

btw, we are currently getting ready for a move (as soon as I can get a transfer to another centre). Our requirements are...and we have no kids...our bedroom, a spare room, a studio for working on my pictures, a weight/exercise room, a workshop and a bike room. In essence, 2 people need a 6 bedroom home, although some of these could be combined, as they are in our current 3 bedroom house.

OK... because if we spend money on bikes we want to spend money on bikes (not on storing them)... and because we live in NZ where anyone can fix or do anything with a piece of number 8 wire...

This is what we do (not unlike SingleTrackMind)... in the shed we had several old handle bars (curved. not straight) from various unusable bikes, which we have attached up high on walls (unlined, so there is room for the bike to hang without touching the lining - coz there is none!) or on rafters, and the top bar of the bike slips over those.

We have also got some strong brackets, wrapped them like cladding in old past-repair tubes (coz there happens to be a few lying around) and used those to hang the frames from. (Old tubes make excellent tie-ons when transporting bikes too...)

This way the wheels are not getting squished on the floor and don't complain about getting numb, the bikes cannot be knocked over, they cannot be crashed into, they are not "in the way" and each has its own spot, so they never argue with each other about being in the wrong place.

Most important in a stable of mountain bikes, race bikes and TT bikes for 7 humans!!!

We have an old coat rack from some restaurant that instead of a line of coat hangers now has an old set of handlebars on it, and is ideal for bike maintainance, coz you just hook the top bar of the bike on and then fiddle with wheels, chain, clean the bike... whatever - brilliant!

We have 9 bikes. We also have a largeish 1 bedroom apt. At the moment 5 bikes are in the bedroom. They are lined up side by side with storage boxes (of bike stuff) in between them. Works out pretty well there. In the living room there are only two bikes at the moment. One additional bike, a towner with the Bob trailer attached, is locked in storage under the outside stairs. One road bike is away from home with John, who had to go out of town and took a bike in case he could get a ride in on his trip.

We have 4 frames in boxes too. I think they will all be sold eventually.

We have a garage (our apt is over a 4 car garage), but it is communal and we don't keep anything valuable in there.

We'd love to have more bikes, but storage is an issue. If we get a house someday a garage or basement is mandatory.
