Slowly slipping grips

My bike for errands is a Huffy cruiser with handlebar grips.

The grips fit tightly on the bars, but nonetheless slowly creep off, so that the end part of the grip drifts off the bar. The grip there is just a soft hunk of rubber with no support.

I push the grip back onto the bar, but it starts drifting off again within a few days.

Any suggestions for making the grips stay in place?

Also wondering whether I might just replace the grips with handlebar tape.
Why isn't handlebar tape used on cruisers?

P.S. This bike has coaster brakes and is a single speed, so there are no brakes or gearshifts on the handlebars.

Hairspray can be used to "tackify" grips. Just spray the bar, slide the grip into place, and leave it be until the harispray dries.

Or, there are lock-on grips that fasten with a collar and allen bolt. Something like this: http://www.odigrips.com/lock-on.aspx

The flat handlebars on my commuter has some grips that tend to slip off....especially if they are wet I have just been living with it but I may have to replace them someday since I am also convinced that they are too long for my handlebar width and are therefore a bit beaten up.
