Oregon is a pretty cool place.

Random Oregon thread drift warning: I was wondering - we are motoing up through there in a few weeks, and this question occurred to me: do you know if gas stations insist on filling the tank of your motorcycle in the same way that they insist on filling you car? Just wondering. Filling a motorcycle can be a little tricky.

MP - I would assume so. They insist on filling our 5 gallon plastic jug for the tractor, so I would think they'd expect to fill the motorcycle too.

I believe that Oregon has a state law that says you may not pump your own gas....

also OT, but From Thursday the 23rd to Sunday the 27th I'll be down in Bend doing support for my team at the Cascade Classic. I'll likely be doing a bit of riding on my own too, as long as they don't keep me too busy

Your team is Group Health, right? I'll keep an eye out. We haven't firmed up plans for the week, but we are signed up to do the finish line set-up for the Three Creeks race on Wednesday.

We traditionally bike up to Bachelor to see the end of the road race there but it's on a Friday this year. Bummer. Oh well, I've been doing so little road riding that it wouldn't be pretty.

Yep - that's my team. Our kits are mostly teal this year, but we still have a little chartreuse. I'm not sure what my role during the races will be -probably either in the car (yes we get an actual car in the caravan!) or at the feed zones?? I have to work up to Wednesday, so I'll miss the first two stages.

I'm an AA member. It would be interesting to look at the fine print to see how they word the requirement for roadside assistance i.e., does it specifically mention automobiles?
I realize it's name includes "automobile" but still.

I know AAA does not include coverage for motorcycles or RVs unless you pay extra for it.

Gosh, we're such hicks here. What's a motorcycle?

Edit: BTW, as of July 1, while explaining to the hick what a motorcycle is, it is illegal to ask him/her to top off your gas tank.

I've heard that most places will just press the button and hand you the nozzle if you like.

They have the same law in NJ, btw.

DH fills our car all the time when we go to see the in-laws in NJ. The attendant does exactly that- activates the dispenser and walks away to help someone else while DH fills the car.

I've never understood the point of not allowing self-fueling, especially considering that the most attendants (at least in NJ) use the hold-open latch anyway. Those things cause more spills than they prevent.

I may be pulling this out of the air, but I could swear I'd heard that the law in Oregon was about not putting filling station attendants out of work rather than about not spilling gas?

I have had gas station attendents tell me they'll be fired if they let you handle the pump.

I have not researched the whys and wherefores. I can tell you it is very important on the Dry Side to be sure to touch your vehicle first to discharge static electricity before pumping gas.

I was actually referring to motorcycles specifically, good to know that though.

Yes, the Oregon law is to protect the jobs of the gas station attendants.
