The Gummi Bear is a German creation. Hans Riegel, a candy maker from Bonn, Germany, invented the Gummi Bear in 1922

I had no idea they'd been around so long.

I did know they were German, because I was introduced to them by a guy who'd been in the US Army stationed in Germany in the 1970s, before they were imported to the USA. To this day, I still pronounce it "gummi" bears. People look at me funny.
