We like small, eclectic, original, European style hotels so the Cartwright has always been our favorite and it is right in the heart of everything. You absolutely do not need to rent a car, unless you want to head over to Marin or up to Sonoma or Napa. If you are going to be there on a Saturday morning, SF has the most fantastic Farmers' Market at the Ferry Plaza on Embarcadero.

I have no recommendations, but could you squeeze me into one of your suitcases, pretty please? I've been dying to go back and see more of that city.
"How about if we all just try to follow these very simple rules of the road? Drive like the person ahead on the bike is your son/daughter. Ride like the cars are ambulances carrying your loved ones to the emergency room. This should cover everything, unless you are a complete sociopath."

Make sure to pack lots of layers! It gets cold at night or when it's foggy here.

Yeah, but that's especially in the summer months. Come September/October the Central Valley starts to cool down, which stops the hot-air-rising midday "pump" that pulls damp air in off the Pacific across the cold Humboldt Current making all that afternoon fog. So Sep/Oct is when San Francisco gets its best weather, before the shorter Fall days and the on-coming rainy season make for cooler weather overall by November. You've picked the best time to see SF. Still, a heat wave in the Valley can still pull in the fog now and then, so do bring a fleece jacket just in case.
Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.
