I feel inadequate at 2. And yet, justified, because I want more!

I need a commuter, but can make my current Specialized Sequoia into a good commuter if I upgrade to a better road bike. So that is the plan for the future. I also have a Santa Cruz Juliana Mountain Bike who I'm really just getting to know!

I forgot to add that I may only have 2 bikes but I have 16 pairs of running shoes in my office (15 are brand new and still have that wonderful new running shoe smell) I get a lot of the double-takes when visitors see the stacks of boxes. They have no idea what to say or ask.

Speaking of tandems.....can anybody think oog why the &^$% thing would have stopped shifting when the drum brake went on? It was shifting great. Our mechanic says "it's an old freewheel" and we need to just replace the wheel. But, it was shifting fabulously until they "played" with the spacing....

I'm down to three (finally!). One road, one tourer/commuter and one mountain bike. I love all three and doubt there will be any additions to the stable until I can afford full custom.

My H is down to 5 and that's pretty good for him.

We lived in an apartment (2 BR) when we first moved here for about 5 months and the bike situation was a real problem. We had a grand total of 11 bikes at the time. Luckily, we were able to also rent a garage for *most* of the time we lived there. It only became a problem in the last two months when we gave up the garage to save money. We put 4 bikes that weren't being ridden regularly in our new home and I immedately sold one of mine. That left 6 in a small 2 BR. Three in the spare room (with a computer desk and two large dog crates!), one on the balcony, one in the living room and one in the second bathroom. The worst part is that we have a dog who is terrified of bikes when they are in the house. I'm surprized she survived those two months with no long-term mental damage!

    1 folder (road)
    1 mountain bike

Been wavering over whether to outfit the mtb with a rack for neighborhood errands and groceries, as I have not taken it out in a few years due to injury and being too busy with school/work. But still hoping I'll find the time to get out on a trail one of these days.

Wow....I don't feel so bad any more. I was thinking I was out of control with 4:
    • Galanas (Waterford Road)
    • Edwina (S&S coupled Waterford)
    • Surly (rain and winter slush bike--with a brand like Surly she doesn't need another name)
    • Tank (Cannondale hybrid with snow tires)

    LOL!

I've been on a see-it, want-it bender this last month. I had to have my kids remind me that I don't NEED another bike at our last trip to REI. Fortunately, the bike shopping spree urges are calming down.

I have 4, but the cruiser I have is going to get donated to a local bike co-op now that I have the Masi mixte to use as my toodle around bike. My Rodriguez is a tourer that I use most of the time. It's great for long rides and to pull DD's trailer up the hills we have around here. If I had to go down to one bike, she's the one. I have a classic Miyata mixte that I found abandoned last year, but I haven't had a chance to fix it up yet. It needs a lot of work. Dh likes to remind me that the $$ I'd sink into fixing it up is more than what the bike sold for new in the '80s. But he's not counting in inflation While I do think it should be ridden by someone even if it's not me, I'm just not ready to give it up yet.

I think it'd be fun to have a lighter go-fast road bike one of these days. And I'm occasionally tempted to try out dirt, but I don't know if I could handle the frequent bumps and bruises that seem to come with being a new rider. Oh, and DD is about to out-grow that trailer I mentioned earlier and she's not ready to ride her own bike farther than the closest park and grocery store. What do I do then? The trail-a-bike feels too unstable for me to be comfortable riding with it in traffic. I wish I could get a FollowMe bike coupler in the states. <sigh> From what I've heard, the low attachment point makes it feel more stable than a trail-a-bike or the Trail-Gator tow bar.

Well, even though this thread topic sounds familiar, but can't be bothered to do a search for older thread..

I'm knocked out...Shefly with her 10 bikes. Jeepers.

    Have 3: 2 hybrids, 1 mountainbike
He has 3: hybrid, touring road and folding bikes.
We each have storage lockers, but mine is in a common bike locker with other people's. My standalone storage locker includes a jumble of art supplies and canvasses, which I would have to repack to accommodate another bike if I get one later.

The next one probably down the road, will be a folding bike.

I think we've been down this road before, too, but it's fun to see how many bikes people have, and who else shares this addiction - er, passion . And I think there may have been one or two who bested me in number...

Since others have listed, here's my breakdown:

1 road racing bike, Kestrel Evoke Carbon
1 road training bike, Rocky Mountain Turbo
    1 road singlespeed, Voodoo Limba
1 MTB FS racing bike, Specialized Epic
1 MTB FS training bike, BMC
1 MTB singlespeed, Soul Cycles Hooligan
1 'cross racing bike, Specialized TriCross
1 'cross training/pit bike, Specialized TriCross
1 'cross foul weather/trainer/commuter bike, Flyte
1 TT racing bike, Cannondale Ironman
1 road tandem, Cannondale (I claim the whole tandem since we have two - the other is a TT-specific Cannondale)

Oh, and since MP counted the Ducati, I have a Honda Ruckus (scooter) for errands and commuting

SheFly (no, we don't have children, college funds, etc....)

Wow, now I'm feeling both jealous AND inadequate with just my one bike.

I like to think of my bike as a general practitioner in a world of specialists. It's a touring bike that I've now used for touring, commuting, charity rides and one tiny triathlon. Every time I think of getting a speedy road bike I hear my depression-era father in my head telling me that what I have is just fine for my needs. And I'm STILL sitting on a generous REI giftcard my sisters gave me back in January, thinking I could use it for a fun cruiser or a partial payment on a road bike. I can't make up my mind, and Dad's voice keeps telling me what I have is fine, so why would I spend money on something I don't need?

I have 4 bikes. I never thought I would EVER say that!!

    1. My first bike is front suspension MTB (Diamondback Response) which I ride weekly with a group from May through October.

    2. My wonderful roadie, my Felt FW3, new this year.

    3. My wonderful touring bike, Specialized Tri-cross Sport...and

    4. My old road bike (Diamondback Master) which I will keep until after my 1500 mile road ride in August. (I need it while my Felt is in transit each way). Then I plan (maybe to sell it). We shall see.

I love them ALL!! ...but am way more comfortable on my new Felt.

We don't have a car and don't intend to get one so it's easier for us to justify. I only use 1 of my bikes regularily. The other 2 bikes have been used in the past, each for several years. I just have them around for times when regular bike is being repaired or when I have guest staying with us, to invite them for an easy cycle.

If you don't have huge loans/bills to pay and are living within your means, plus if you've had your current bike for many years with alot of mileage on it, then it's alot easier to make the decision.

And taking time to check out speedy road bike models would help. And you know that "checking out" could mean several months...which means saving up more money for no.2.

I'm already at that stage! I started with a lot of internet research over the past several months, then just going into the LBS for various other things and looking at the road bikes while I was there, then on my most recent trip I talked to one of the guys in the shop but didn't do any test riding. That'll be the next trip.

I figure I can drag this process out for a long time, but with a trip to Ireland and Norway coming up in a couple of months, I'd have a hard time justifying the expense.

It'll happen. I need to make DH read this thread so he can see that I'm not crazy to want more than one bike!

I have one road bike which I love

... and one mountain bike which I don't ride much

Maybe one day I will have two road bikes, but now I don't see the point... my next purchase will be a horse

    1 hard tail mountain bike
    1 full suspension mountain bike
    1 carbon fiber road bike
    1 steel road bike
1 cross bike (soon to be sold to my sister in law)

So, 5 right now; but I will soon only have 4.

    Hubby has 6.

    TOTAL 11 in the house.
