Does it have a horizontal or vertical dropout? You need a way to tension the chain.

I have a recent-ish aluminum frame (actually it's a complete bike) that I don't really use. The components are not really good and it doesn't ride that well. It's currently a triple chainring at the front with a rear 7-speed cassette, some lower-level Shimano.
Could it be converted to an internal gearing system? I'd be happy with just 8 speeds. Or even 3. Insight?
Thank you!

If you look up single speed conversions you'll that either you need a horizontal dropout so the wheel can slide back enough to tension the chain, or you need some other chain tensioning method, like an eccentric hub or bb or a pseudo-derailleur chain tensioner if you're running a single rear cog and single chainring. Though I suppose you could keep the triple crankset and front derailleur, and keep the rear derailleur as a chain tensioner.
