What I do for grown dogs who don't know how to hold it for outside:

For a few days, I attach them via a leash to my waist, whenever they are out of the crate or not outside. Therefore, they have to follow me every where I go. This attaches them to me literally, and emotionally, too. They can get really bored while I'm sitting down doing something and they will eventually lie down. That's what I want them to do, especially if they are attention hounds.

While I'm in the house with the dogs, I narrow down the rooms they have available if they are off the leash. Then, I play with them on the floor of those rooms, or just sit and pet them there, so they can get the idea that this is their den. Most dogs do not want to pee where they hang out. This is why our back room and one of our bedrooms (seldom used) have become the regular victims of the odd dog. The regular dogs who live here never make a mess in the house because they know that we like all these rooms and want to keep them clean.

I have a dog here now who thinks the back room is THE place to go in the night (he's an 100 lb Weimaraner, so I don't have a crate that big). Once we found the first stain, we closed that room off and he hasn't peed inside since.

The other advantage of tying the dog to you for a few hours every day is that if you do catch him trying to mark or chew on something, you can correct him right away, which will help him learn the limits.

Dar this one is tricky. Yeah you could wrap him up but that won't do much good long term. I've had a lot of success with our stores herbal formulas and some of the brands of flower essences we carry. Hank sucks with moving and spent the first few weeks in our new place attacking one of the weaker, but unfortunately poorly socialized and stupid, dogs in our house. Yeah he didn't listen to a lick of doggy body language but it was overkill. I put him on this for the course of the bottle and it worked wonders. He still beats on the little dork but only when it's really called for. Now he's just teaching him dog rules, not being a shameless jerk.

Thanks guys. I don't think this is a case of him not being abot to hold it. I work from home so I'm here to let them out frequently. It's more clearly a case of marking his territory and trying to establish dominance.

There have been no incidents in the last 2 days as he is getting used to the routine around here. Crating is getting better but he still will not go voluntarily into a crate. I think the vet said it best - he's got a sassy streak! I'm thinking it's the red hair cuz my son has the same thing, lol.

Sundial - I put him in my room last night. He only threw a fit for about 45 minutes but everytime I moved in bed he started crying. I think I will continue to let him spend some time cuddling with my son in his bed when I tuck my son in, and put him in my room in his crate when I go to bed. Now all we need is for the snow/sleet to stop so we can all go for a walk!

My dear little Queen-of-Quite-a-Lot, Miss Tasha, has gone to the bridge today. DH and I were at her side, stroking her, comforting her (as best we could), and crying lots. We suspect it was kidney failure.

I adopted Tasha from the House Rabbit Society in October 2000 to keep my Noah company. She was always a thinker....she'd give you this "look" - and you know she was turning things over in that little bunny brain of hers. And she was always ready to give kisses: She was such a kisser. She loved bananas, cilantro, your undivided attention, and a good run around the couch. She didn't like slippery floors (hardwood) or stairs.

Oh, but I am going to miss that little girl.
