I live in NYC and I've never yet locked up my bike. My Xootr is better for most errands, but it would be nice to be able to at least dash into the grocery store when I'm biking. Today I saw a couple of bikes with u-lock and cable combos and the u-lock went through the saddle rails.

Here's a Craigslist ad from a guy who said they cut down a tree to get his bike.

At one point I considered posting about how paranoid I am about theft, but what could anyone say? I've always been told you shouldn't get attached to your bike in NYC, but I really would be so sad if my perfectly ordinary Trek got taken by some hoodlum.

If you really want to lock it, try these for saddles and wheels:

I got one so I could completely lock my s/s coupled bike, but it makes changing a tire a tad more work.

After having a locked bike stolen, my advice is to only use a beater in a high crime area. My cervelo lives in my living room and only goes on club/event rides, so I never have to leave her locked anywhere.

Yeah, I've thought about getting a Pitlock seatpost binder. I really don't have a need for quick-release on my seatpost.
