So if your partner can't ride due to injury....

Do you wait tilll they feel better and can ride again before you ride or do you just go? I tend to wait till my hubby feels better and he seems to do the same. I don't think up till now either of us realized we do this. My hubby during a volley ball game last week hurt his knee. Fairly bad! We were playing doubles and winning. He, even though he is almost 51 really put's his all into it but it didn't pay off this time. He has had an x-ray and is being looked at today. But of coarse he has not been on his bike since this happend and either have I. it's strange but my motivation goes out the door. and when I was sick last month he didn't go out either. Do you do this?

My DH took three months off the bike last year when I was injured. He is a much nicer person than I....

If it is short term he usually goes but funny thing is he usually shortens it because he feels bad for me. I do not like to ride alone so if he is sick or injured I will usually run or sit at home. Right now DH has the mother of all saddle-sore/abcesses, sorry TMI and I am not sure how we will approach. It might require weeks of off the bike time.

Hope DH heals fast. You know the only difference between the men and the boys- size of their feet and the price of their toys. They don't grow up.

To funny! I am glad I am not the only one! I have a few friends who say I cater to much to him but I love him so what's wrong with that. I do feel bad if Ican go out and he can't. I even passed up 2 volley ball games this week cause he could not play. It just feels like I am rubbing it in his face.

When I fractured my shoulder I insisted that he ride anyway. We had an organized ride that we signed up for which was my husbands first. It was in the next state so it was a ride we stayed over night for and it was a small group of us. The plan was to ride the 50 mile route, but they ended up riding the 65 m route. Yes, I did get a littly ansy sitting around the grounds of the start/stop area and got a bit annoyed that they extended it, but was glad he did it in the long run.

Since he works on weekends, I have done plenty of organized rides with him.

He went through chemo treatments last summer and insisted many times for me to get on the bike, which I did for a couple of hours.

It kinda depends for us...short healing time we usually skip out for the other, find other things to do in the home. Longer healing times we go on and ride, but maybe not as often.

Last year when my hubby was out with a broken ankle we went to the YMCA together almost every night...he did upper body and I did both...he would "coach" me on the leg machines. I did a little swimming too. It was fun and a great way to spend time together! I still went on long rides with my friends so I could keep in cycling shape for upcoming races.

This year 2 of our couple friends got knocked-up so the guys are calling hubby for rides (guy rides per say) I am feeling a little left behind and not due to an injury... But we are in the very very beginning of our season and have not worked out the training regimen yet...I am sure now that the days are longer we will get out act together.

I find this interesting truely! Here all this time I thought we were strange. But I think it is more a kindness to the other. Knowing the other is wanting to be better so they too can go out and play makes you stop and say "I can find something else to do". I just feel like I am rubbing it in his face that I feel great and healthy and he doesn't. SO I go garden or do walks and stuff. That way i don't get grumbles and what not's.

I think mine comes down to not enjoying riding alone. If he doesn't want to/can't come I usually stay home. I do not have riding buddies save for a couple gals I will call mountain rides with but no roadies. I am content to run and so far we have not addressed a long term illness. When he was off the bike with his first Crohn's flare up I was so exhausted and frightened I didn't even think of riding this was probably 1-2 months of no riding. This current injury? I am training for a half marathon and the thing should be cleared up in a few weeks when my run is over.

I think he is sensitive to if I am ill he doesn't want me home for 4-6 hours so he will shorten his ride. If your own spouse doesn't that doesn't mean they are inconsiderate, just DH doesn't like to leave me home. Unless he knows I am really sick and will sleep for a long time, then I prefer he stays gone. LOL. We also spend a lot of time together which may explain some differences. If we are running in opposite directions too long it wears on him, he isn't clingy per se but he doesn't like to be apart extended times either. Oddly we did long distance for two years!

DH and I often ride together, but separate. That is, many of our weekend rides are group rides, so we each find our own sub-group and ride there. So, when he was hurt and had his knee surgery, I still did my rides. I even the occasional solo ride - on routes that we might have otherwise done just the two of us. Twice now, such solo rides has allowed me to meet people on the roads who turned out to be neighbors! Strange to meet someone who lives around the corner for the first time when out on a bike, miles from home. But then, I think I'm much more willing to chat on rides than DH - who tends to be a head-down-and-hammer kind of rider. He barely talks to ME when we ride together. I would fully expect him to do his rides if/when I'm laid out.

Hey Brandi, Sorry about yout DH. We kind of don't ride when the other is injured, except a few years ago, my DH broke his pelvis and I did ride a little because it was a long term recovery. Hope he feels better soon and you're both back on your bikes.

We've both become very addicted. As a result, in case of work or illness--"too bad for you. I'll stop at Walgreens on the way back!" The other day, I got a late start on my ride after he'd ridden with the boys--I phoned home and told him to make his own dinner!

Hi Nina how are you/ How are your kitty cats? hey we will be back at the fair again this year. Maybe we will see you again.
we both got on our bikes yesterday. Thank God. But hubby more then likely has a torn acl. Lucky for him he can bike at this time. Unless he has sugery. But he will wait to have sugery after our work season is over I am sure. Thanks for your concern. Hope all is well!

Well, I wouldn't stop riding and I haven't, but I do shorten rides. I ride alone more than my husband, but they are usually short, loop rides, when I only have an hour. His alone rides are commutes, where he can hammer away. We don't like to be away from each other, either. I know it's weird, but it's true. I think if there was a long term illness or injury, we would tell each other to go, but we wouldn't be out all day, leaving the sick one alone. I did go for a group ride the day after he had his angioplasty. . I asked him if it was OK and he told me to go. I did feel a little guilty and if it were now I probably would have just gone a short local ride. So much of life is "doing" this stuff together, that it would be a major adjustment.

My DH and I have become co-dependent on each other when it comes to riding. He pumps up the tires while I'm mixing our water bottles and packing snacks. He's mapping the route, while I'm checking that we have sunblock. We each have our little part that we do and if one of us goes out without the other we always forget something. We also workout together at the gym. If one of us is tired, the other encourages us to keep going until we're done our routine. It's ridiculous, I know, but after 22 years we're just an old couple who have become like one person... I have half the brain and he has the other half... LOL.
