My LBS recycles scrap metal. I am too lazy to take care of it myself so I let them. When I recently broke my seat post they asked if I wanted it back, I said no and they said "that is okay we have a metal recycling bin". Sweet. They also recycle CO2 cartriges. My local trash is to behind the times for recycling but at least my LBS keeps me feeling good about myself.

Don't even get me started about the downfalls of curbside recycling in most of Texas...sigh

I live in the sticks, I happy I don't have to burn my trash since it isn't possible right now!

When I used to commute to work I would see a man and his son drive a long and collect cans/metal out of people's bins to go recycle themselves. I guess it is an extra buck when you need it.
