I am a novice rider, and bought my first bike for commuting to school in August. It is a cruiser, and I enjoy riding it, and it works for me because I live in a very flat town. But, I find my eye strays when I see a bike with gears, and I practically fawn over older model 10 speeds, and I love the mixte flair. The pictures on this thread have solidified my desire for just such a creature.

A few days ago I saw a bike on craigslist (a women's Gitane Gran Sport Deluxe, probably from the mid 70's) and almost bought it for $150. But, after speaking with my LBS and reading about older french bicycles online, I decided it was too much investment for my needs/budget. I really want a cute, reliable bike that I can ride in town and maybe a ways out of town when the mood strikes. Again, as much as I love my cruiser, sometimes I need a bit more speed!

I found this forum to be helpful and inspiring, and it is nice to finally read some comments by women about cycling. I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a reliable place to buy a used mixte near Sacramento or the Bay Area?
