Usually I just avoid it don't keep it around, but with a gift, as in your case, giving it away is an excellent idea unless you are going to keep eating it, and then I say either lock it in the trunk of your car, take it to the office/gym NOW, or toss. And when you toss, make sure you open it, dump it and toss the cat's litter on top.
BAWHAAA!

The cat litter I had never done. DH is allergic to kitties, but I would love to have one (have a dog). I try dumping the coffee grinds on it. But, I know exactly what you mean. I sickly have been tempted to dig something out of the trash in my past dieting days. One of my GFs says to imagine maggots are crawling on the food.

I do know exactly what you are saying about throwing half the candy bar away. The "eat half" concept is how I dropped my 40#s I carried for many years as I re-found the love for riding. It is a really hard concept if you were raised to not waste food. Resturants are the worst at portions.

On the pieces of chocolate I did eat, if once I bit into it and it was a filling I didn't like, I didn't finish it. I asked mysel "is this REALLY worth it (calories) if I don't even like it?". I try to re-gift it to one of the fm if it's a flavor they like. If not, I pitched the other half.
