SG - glad to hear Leela and family are adjusting fine. Glad you like the pig. In real life her little legs are pedaling but I can't get it to carry over here.

Llyod rocks! I was asking my son the other day to look at a bulldog to see if he'd like them. He turns his stubborn little red head refusing to look at it and said:
"No Mom. I told you already - I want a Chi-Chi-wow-wa".

We had seen a long haired chihuahua at the humane society and he liked it. Man, that kid cracks me up!

MTbdarby, your son sounds like a young man who knows his own mind. Here are two Chi-chi-wow-wa pictures for him. Actually, I'm not sure of the long-haired dog's breed, but he could be a Chi-chi-wow-wa.

Pam, my son is 6 and wants a dog of his own, to play with and sleep in his bed. From what I've read about the chi-chi's, it doesn't sound like they are the best breeds for a young child to train (generally speaking). Plus he's down by his dad most weekends and the dog would have to stay with me, so most likely will attach to mom anyway...thus my dilemna.

Of course, I have Zeus and I think he's jealous because Zeus has become my shadow since Xena died. Guess we'll see...

My dogs know I'm the boss, but they still sleep with my son. Seems right to them...he's part of the pack, too!

On a parenting and dogs note, I always made sure that I, the mom, was okay with any pet the boys wanted, that it appealed to me and that I was willing to care for it. Because...it would be my pet in short order. They were kids--I didn't expect them to follow through on all the fervent promises to care for it after the initial fun wore off. I don't like dogs in my bed (or cats, but try telling that to the cat!), so all of our dogs have been trained to sleep with one of the boys. When that boy moved out they moved to the next kid's bed. Thus, I have been the long-term caretaker of 5 dogs, 5 or 6 cats, 2 hamsters and way too many hermit crabs to count!

To our kids, moms are the source of all things good. It won't be long before the dogs figure that out, too. The important thing is that the dog knows he's next in line behind the KID.

Karen, I agree that the dog will ultimately be mine to care for, which is why I'm not a big fan of the chi-chi. Don't know, but small dogs don't do it for me.

I called on 2 dogs this week - a border collie and an elkhound (78lbs!). Both were already taken. I'm thinking it's a sign I should stay a single dog household for now.

She looks awesome! I have a Mal, too, but she's somewhat of a "rescue" from a working dog breeder who said she didn't pass the puppy temperament tests. I believe it... she doesn't have the "bold" personality that most of them have, though she still does funny Malinois things like jumping over the back of the couch or coffee table instead of walking around it.

Andrea she's beautiful.I have two Jack russells as well. I tell everybody they are teacup malinois. All crackheads. I wish I got my girl as a pup. They are so cute and innocent when they are little.

Here's Shiloh as a puppy right after the fosterer found him at the shelter with a smashed hip (right). He was about 6-7 months old and that hip had been broken for a month or two. He had surgery (FHO for the vet types out there). He's three years old now and he's not slowed down at all. I've had him for two months now!

He is really cool looking. Does Shiloh have hardware from the surgery? Still wondering what he is. Theres a spaniel breed with his markings. But he must have some aussie in him as well.

No hardware, apparently. The procedure is called a Femoral Head Ostectomy, which removes the ball from the ball-and-socket joint of the hip. Fibrous tissue takes over so there's no bone-on-bone. People who know alot more about dogs than I do say he's likely a border collie-Australian Cattle Dog mix. I don't think he's Australian Sheepdog because his coat is not that thick. He's not a merle, just black and white, like a longer-haired dalmation with big black patches. He points at squirrels, so perhaps he's got some pointer in him. They have similar markings. He could be all border collie, too. I've seen photos of purebred border collies that look alot like him. The ears are like many border collies, except for the fringe. Maybe there is some honorary Papillon in him, but I don't see how a 45-lb dog could be part Papillon.

He's very protective. I have an appointment with the dog trainer tomorrow.

Hmmm... if he points, I'd say he's got a little English Setter mixed in there somewhere. Whatever he is, he's a very handsome boy!

Andrea -- that puppy pic of your Malinois is SOSOSOSOS cute! That cracks me up they just jump over things rather than go around.. is that typical for the breed?

Tulip: We had a dog at Vet School that was a shelter dog -- I did my first spay on her, and she looked a lot like Shiloh (only female!). I always thought she was so beautiful. She found a really good home and I was jealous because I couldn't have a dog where I lived.
