    Austin

My husband keeps telling me that Austin is not like Houston and it is not that humid. I keep telling him that Portland is not that cold.

It seems we are at an impasse as to where to move.

I looked at the average temperature in Austin and it's in the 90's for many months.

I do not like to be outside in Wisconsin when it is in the 90's. I prefer the 70's. I would never sit in the sun. I think 85 is hot. WI does get into the upper 90's and it is humid but that is not the norm in the summer.

Is he correct or are my fears real? I looked at a map, Austin is very close to Houston. I can't be fooled...

It looks like Austin is more humid in the am than the afternoon which seems odd to me. We have the opposite. That would make it better, we ride later in the afternoon normally.

    Thanks!

Austin is not the muggy humidity of Houston but it is HOT!!! I am a native for all of my 28 years (minus the college years 100 miles down the road towards Houston). It is way different from Houston being 200 miles inland but we sweat, a lot. In the late May until early September you will have to be on the bike early in the morning or get real acclimated to riding in 100 degree heat indexes.

I was a February baby, my mom took me home February 24th and had to buy something to put me in because my grandparents bought me a sweater set only problem was it was 84 degrees outside.

Austin is way cooler than Houston could ever hope to be. If I had to pick the big 3 I would say Austin first, then DFW and then Houston. But lets be realistic if I leave Austin I want to leave Texas. Our traffic is a nightmare but who really wants to live anywhere else in Texas?

Oh I dunno. Fort Worth?! Not quite as groovy as Austin admittedly but the housing is like 1/2 the price and it is pretty darn awesome. Oh, and we have trails. LOTS and LOTS of terrific trails.

And yes, all of texas is pretty much wicked wicked wicked hot. If you prefer the 70s I would recommend the west coast because you're not gonna get it anywhere in TX. Except maybe the Davis mountains, but I'm not really sure about that...

Fort Worth is not bad, the area near TCU seemed pretty cool (we went to the Zoo last week). I just get lost in the Metroplex.

Davis Mountains? Love to visit but it is an hour to the nearest Walmart and the animals out there are real wild.

That sounds wonderful! I lived in Austin in the early 1990s and I just loved it. We lived close to campus, not out in the burbs, and I got around mostly by bike and bus. I'm sure it's changed alot since then, though. Housing was expensive then, and I can only imagine that it's much higher now.

As for the weather, I don't mind heat and humidity, and I'm sure it was hot and humid but I don't have any memories of it being dreadful at all. I do remember growing salad greens in my garden all winter long, though!

Cobalt, I know Asheville is not on your list, but weatherwise, it fits your requirements perfectly.

Tulip- You should take the Bike Friday and the SO out to the Davis Mountains one day. It is quiet and quaint, we spent our anniversary camping in the state park, hiking, star gazing and riding the scenic loop (76 miles through the mountains). We are trying to get back to stay in the Indian Lodge at Davis Mountains State Park, it is pretty cool looking.

Good idea, Aggie. I kick myself for not taking advantage of UT's awesome recreational outdoor sports programs when I worked there. They had a weeklong horseback ride in Big Bend when the cacti were in bloom--and I didn't go!!

I do miss Austin. I would have liked to have stayed there if I could have found a decent job. If I were in a position to up and move somewhere, Austin would be near the top of my list (along with Paris, San Luis Obispo, and Charleston).
