    Drill question

    QUESTION:
Does anyone have the name of the drill where you do a side rotation (normal position) then bring up your arm swing it over, touch the water, swing it back, touch the water then do the stroke normal and repeat on the other side?

My coach had me do that one today because I haven't been bringing my right arm up far enough out of the water or rotate enough on that side (I breathe on my left).

I was amazed at how much it helped - When I did my strong swim later - they actually felt stronger w/ less effort.

A friend of mine from a different city swam today and was wondering if that higher stroke would work in a tri (because of wave action) or hurt your rotator cuff.
For me it was a matter of balancing my right to match my left.

All in all it made me think of all those just learning to swim to do a tri WOW!
I have been swimming lap after lap after lap w/ good coaching and still have so much to correct on my stroke - I can't even image how hard it would be to just be learning basics

A great big HIGH FIVE to all of you who are toughing it out in the pool to learn how to do it!

    hey,

do you mean bringing over your arm like a windmill? in that case I wouldn't know a name...

in TI "bringing over" with a high elbow is called zipper skate. but the stroke is not completed in that drill.
Then there's zipper switch where you actually do one full stroke and then breathe.

You say you breathe to your left - always? Do you think it would be worth balancing it out and being able to breathe both sides?
possibly you found your stroke stronger/with less effort because you rotated properly....?

yep, it was hard. Well, difficult and demanding patience. I think after 2 years now, I can consider myself to have an "Ok" stroke.

    that is funny

Thanks Alpine - Windmill may be a really good name for it. Or just Arch over - I was wondering if anyone knew the "real" name for it.

It is not zipper skate or zipper switch (I watched the video links you posted) In this you are actually swinging your arm all the way over like a full stroke, touching the water in front then swinging it back, touching the water in back then swinging it forward again, completing the stroke and repeating on the other side.

I tried it early in the swim today and couldn't do it. I had to wait until I was warmed up better.

I can breathe on both sides but I favor my left when doing 2 count breathing. I have been thinking of mixing it up and only breathing on my right - but I haven't done it - I may have to force myself one of these days. I know when I get going harder I will resort to left side again.

I worked on this again today and my body rotation felt a lot better - I just don't rotate well to the right.

I am in the league where if anyone else looked at it I would have a good stroke - but now that I am swimming again w/ the coach I have she notices and corrects everything (which is a good thing) I liken it to myself - I teach art - the better the artist - the picker and more correcting I get and the harder I push them. I am honoured that she is correcting me.

Alpine, we did a drill and I thought of you - it was a set of 3ct, 4ct, 5 ct breathing. Then we had a 7 count.
