iPod Replacement???

As some of you know, my race bag with iPod was lost at at last weekend's marathon. To date, my race bag has not been found or returned.

I am looking for a replacement iPod, and would like some recommendationd. I had the old iPod Nano, which did not support video. It looks like the new Nano has video, which I do not need, but if everything else is great (ease of use, etc.) I guess I can just ignore the video feature. Also, it looks like the new Nano is motion sensitive. Does anyone have trouble with it while running?

Any other suggestions on what to use? Something cost-effective, without a lot of bells and whistles. I looked at the Shuffle, but it does not have a display, which I think would make it difficult to find the songs I want to have playing.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I have both the shuffle, the old video ipod and then new (newest, not sure) nano with video. I love the shuffle but agree, the lack of display is a problem. I run/walk with the nano on my arm and use my Nike+/iPod thingy. I've never had any issue - then again, maybe using the term "run" for me is a stretch.

I am not all that savy, so I can't compare and contrast other forms of fancy new music machines. But I'm happy with all my iPods and have noticed no problems when I workout.

I also wondered about the newest nano and whether it would shuffle on it's own. If you shake it, it randomly shuffles music. I have the 3rd generation ipod. (The squarish one) and I got it on ebay. There are a lot of them there and you could get a pretty good deal, maybe a great deal after Christmas. I didn't need the video, but did you know you can download yoga and other video workouts? No need to use the dvd player. There are also some workouts at Graehme Street's site that you can put on an ipod. I use the video now for that.

I have a little Sansa Sandisk that I got at target for $40. I wanted something that could hold all the music I want and be sturdy for the bike and run. It has a 2gb memory and can do 40 preset radio stations. I was afraid to pay all that money for something that could get caught in the rain or broken some random way. I recommend getting a non ipod to use for working out. THhis is super simple and easy to use!

No real input - I love my iPod Touch but it's a little large for running with. (An iPhone, on the other hand, would replace your phone too - taking care of that size problem )

Just (as you probably know) if you have any music in AAC format, you have to convert it to MP3 before any portable player other than an iPod will play it. That can mean re-ripping your CDs, converting the files on the computer and losing some sound quality, or (for iTunes purchases) actually burning them to CD and re-ripping that.

I have the Sansa Fuze 8 gigabyte which was significantly cheaper than the iPod. I use it mainly for audiobooks and podcasts. Sound quality for music is great. I've dropped it a million times and it's indestructible.

Thanks for all the great input so far. uforgot -- that's exactly what I'm worried about with the new nano -- the shake and shuffle "feature." Looks like I've got my work cut out for me with doing some research on these different gadgets! The original iPod was a Christmas gift from my place of employment. I'm very unsavvy when it comes to choosing these things on my own.

Creative Labs no longer makes the model I have but
this model is a close second.

Very affordable, plenty of storage, easy to use, no special batteries.

clearly i do not have the newest nano version - all the posts made me go look at apple's site to see. this shake/shuffle thing is not on my version.

the nano is one of the ipod the versions that works with the nike sensor and is meant for running, so how weird that they made a change in it that really does seem like running with it will make you get constantly changing songs. i'm really curious now to hear more about people using this version for running.

this all gets more confusing with the fact that it is a better descriptor to say that i shuffle, rather than run.

I think you can disable the shake and shuffle thing through settings on the new nano. Haven't done it yet so will let you all know for sure.

Edit: Ha! My spouse is SO handy. Here's how you turn off shake/shuffle: Go to Settings; then to Playback; then to Shake. It's set up as the default so it'll say Shake--shuffle. If you toggle that, it'll say off.

I'm still going to look into the other suggestions as well, as I don't think I really need something as fancy as the iPod with video. But, I may want to stick with it as it I figure it will still be a bit familiar.

If you're going to buy a new iPod, I recommend checking out Apple's website for refurbished models. They have a 1-year warranty and we've never had a problem with the few that we've bought as gifts. The nano is $30 cheaper refurbished that way, but it's not the most current generation.

I have an 8 gb meizu that I bought for about $90-100? plays video & mp3's, alot of reviews have claimed it's got better sound quality than the ipod. It's not so big and has a long battery life.
