Dagny Knutson - the 16 yo who swims in the morning the same time I do is at the USA short course meet in Atlanta. Last night she broke the 200IM short course record!

The main pic on the page is Dagny.

And to think her coach is my coach . . .

    Whoa can you tell I am PUMPED ! ! ! !

I DO enjoy it I swam with this coach for 4 years a few years back. She is a regular everyday phys ed teacher at the school where I teach. She was running a morning fitness swimming program in our high school pool just to pick up some extra cash. But once a coach always a coach - she would assign us drills to correct our stroke, continually monitor, and push us quietly so we don't even realize we are being pushed.

I think that makes it even more amazing. Dagny isn't being coached by the high profile university coaches of Olympic athletes but by a high school phy ed teacher and a local 5th grade teacher.

I HAVE been writing down all the workouts I am given for when Dagny graduates in a year and a half, the teacher/coach retires and I am on my own again

Here is a video clip of Dagny breaking the 400 IM record.
It is interesting how the commentator talked about her turns. Our High school swimming program is known for their turns - it is how they win races over other schools.

But, alas, most tris don't have turns (which is good for me because I don't do them well

That's kewl, I always envy the juniors of the local swim club where we currently have our tri club practice.

Their coach is tough. He's from former eastern Germany ;-)

and while our coach was finally able to show us how to turn, contrary to the teacher where I took a longish freestyle course, I don't have enough air because basically, you need air for the time equivalent of about 6-7 strokes to do a good turn.

It's a little secret you didn't know about us women. We're all closet Visigoths.

Great to watch -- she won by a BUNCH! They all look so smooth and easy gliding. Not like me!

WOW - the video was very, very cool!

I love that the coach is a teacher. I'm a teacher too.

Well they are back and still riding on a cloud!

"Our" Whoo hoo coach was there and we swam this morning. I have taught w/ her for 16 years and am as excited for her as for Dagny.

Of course after Dagny swam those times all sorts of offers are rolling in. One is an offer for them to go when it is convenient for them to the high altitude training center at Colorado springs.

Pinch me - I can't believe I am lucky enough to catch the fallout of all this.
(although it is starting to feel a little embarassing to be swimming in the same water as her - but I'll get over it

What makes this even more exciting is we are just a small city (pop about 36,000. in a state of less than 650,000 people) - we don't have a derth of famous people or exceptional athletes
