Pardon for asking - but what school level? .. High School? University? Grad Student? Professional publication?
Who is your audience? As an adult, writing for a federal agency, papers that will be read by the general public, I'm told to write to the 9th grade reading level. I kid you not. It's been a while since I've been in High School, so I'm not sure that I write at that level - but we do try to keep the techno-jargon to a minimum.
