Not to politicize the board but....

The article says " Bush is not interested in road biking, a long-distance endurance test in which the riders wear tight Lycra pants and often shave their legs. Bush says he won't wear Lycra or shave his legs."

Yep, not to politicise the board but I started worrying even more (if that's possible) about this country when I saw that Kerry is a roadie. He rides a Serrota. Did you see him in the team car behind Lance on the last TT? Lucky guy.

And we all know what non-cyclists think of roadies. The general public doesn't think that Bush's full-custom Trek is any different from what they bought at Target or Walmart. He's jist regular folk!

That's ok the more time he spends riding the less he's working. Ride on, Dubya, many many many happy miles. I noticed in the photo he does not seem to be wearing his mouth guard

Ok, someone go tell Robin Williams he's gotta shave his legs.
We aren't even going to get into the rest of him!

Yep, idiotic comment. I don't think it should matter how you dress to be on a bike. Sure, the gear is more comfortable but it's not required. Biking should belong to every person and from what I've seen on the streets it still does.

As for shaving, what idiot thinks you can't pedal a road bike if your legs are hairy? What, the cranks won't turn at all?? Does the hair get tangled around them or something??

no matter what side of the road you pedal on (off or on) let's not forget the fact we have an active, health conscience person in office...don't dwell on the negative or the idiotic comments or have we forgotten...

"In total, the bill will dedicate nearly $3 billion through 2009 on bicycling and walking infrastructure and programs - almost twice the amount approved in the last bill!"

I would rather have a pres out on the trail with hairy legs refusing to wear lycra (could you imagine the late night jokes if he did shave and wear lycra ) than in the oval office enjoying a cigar

Kristin6 asks "Are jokes okay here?"

No, you can't laugh, it's not allowed just kidding.

jokes are not only highly reccomended, they are required by the bike fashion police. And last I heard we can still joke about da Pres, the US govt, or any issue. When we can't then I am REALLY moving to Canada.

I'm surprised the bike fashion police didn't pull Dubya over for cycling without lycra. Maybe they were put off by the Secret Service.

I used to have a Hawian print jersey that said "Big Kahuna", that'd look good on him.

    re: W's cycling attire

I think that I read somewhere that he was wearing a "western-styled jersey" to reflect his Texas roots, especially during his "working" vacation ... oops, delete slight editorial comment there! No offense anyone, k?

To each their own opinion and all that *but* when everyone hears what you say and somehow assumes you are an expert on everything you do (no, really, some people really think he knows what he's talking about on every subject that comes out of his mouth) comments like that aren't cool. The general public shouldn't assume that you have to shave your legs or wear certain clothing to ride a bike on the road (unless it's a helmet). The lot of us that wear lycra has got to be a small percentage of all people on a bike.
I do think it's cool that he is not only riding in his near-sixties but willing to encourage others to do so and put our money where his mouth is. Heck, if more people stayed fit there'd be less money spent on healthcare, right? If more people walked or rode to shops or work there'd be less polution and so on and on and on...

    point well taken...

i think my brains fell out this morning...i actually spoke (typed ) before i thought...i have a brutal cummute by car in the mornings and it takes a while to relax
not that that is an excuse but i am using it

in fact...my otherhalf and i were just discussing the fact that he has reflectors on his $3000 custom trek (i saw a pic of it somewhere) and in the mtbike community that is a joke if you are a REAL mtber. I (miss optimistic) said "maybe he is keeping those on in order to make an image for the youngsters out there?" while the other half said "it is the law for the lbs to sell the bike with reflectors!"...the conversation went on...the point is that i did not think about it that way....

heck i dont even shave my legs all the time
