There are lots of fixed gear bikes with brakes. Actually I think around here they are illegal if they are without brakes at all (aside from the coaster brakes).

Riding a single-speed is a very different feeling.

When I have a garage I'll get a fixie (with brakes).

    No

But I have a single speed. We love each other. I have a single front brake. The bike was reclaimed from the junk heap and is seeing a lot of time on the road. I still use my multi-speed road bike for long rides.

I'm not ready for a fixie...

    Bikes are good,

Thanks everyone. Sounds like most people who have 'em really like to ride 'em. I tried one out on the track about a month ago and it was really fun. I'll keep y'all posted if I end up getting one

my husband has 2 fixed gears. he never wants a geared bike again he says!! i learned to love my gears although i would not be opposed to a single speed i like the option of coasting....especially down hills!
i would rather be hated for what i am than loved for what i'm not....
