Cathy, Scott really tried to get some interest in this at AB when he was in HS. There was even a teacher who was willing to coach. But there was absolutely no student interest. A few kids were interested in mountain bike stuff (Scott had mt. biked with most of them), but no one could fathom road biking.
It's too bad, because he felt totally isolated because he was doing an out of school sport. He participated in some other things, community service and the debate team, but he really hated the way some of the other jocks looked down on him... until his anatomy and physiology teacher did a Vo2 max test on him in the fitness center after school. Most of the football players were there to see the results and it kind of put them in their place.
He just took a physical for jump school (don't ask). The doctor told him he had the lowest resting heart rate he had ever seen! He said he told the doctor that he started riding when he was 13 and now he runs and swims. I guess it was kind of unusual, even in a very fit population of Marines.
