Exactly. In our mountain bike races - in my area - we do sex and age group categories, but the overall winner IS the overall winner, no matter who crosses first. The fastest person is the fastest person.

I feel this was done in poor taste. Sure, let the Elites have their awards, but the overall winner needs recognition.

It does seem in poor taste to me as well. When you look at other marathons, the elite women are finishing 2:20 and 2:30s. The article says that O'Connell didn't consider herself an elite runner, and that's probably because she usually runs over a 3 hr marathon. Preferred Start, DEFINITELY. Really fast marathon--YES. Elite--that's debatable.

How was she to know that "elite" runner in this marathon meant a 3 hr race? It doesn't seem fair.

Nike ammended their decision. When I looked up the results earlier today, Adrien is listed as the winner.

I'm glad that her performance was acknowledged.

At the same time, I'm a bit confused: as they get rid of the "elite" category next year, are they going to keep applying the "gun time prevails" rule?
