But, but, but . . . I don't get it. If you enter a "class" you race in that class. I obviously don't know rules for runs, but I can sure see where the class you enter makes a difference. Sometimes, it just has to be a learning experience.

This is what should have been included in the story. Yes, there was an elete group which required special application, but it appears that prizes were for overall results PLUS age groups.

If I were she and wanting to pursue racing marathons, I'd ask how to report this on my running resume for future races.

HOW CAN I APPLY TO RACE IN THE ELITE WOMEN’S DIVISION?
If you would like to be considered for entry into the Elite Women’s Division, please send a running resume no later than October 1, 2008 with past marathon or half marathon finishing times to Nike@TriCalifornia.com. You will be notified if you have been accepted for the Elite Women’s Start.

WHAT PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED, AND IN WHAT CATEGORIES?
Commemorative memorabilia designed by Tiffany & Co. will be given to the top (3) overall women and men in the Marathon and Half Marathon. Age group awards will be provided and will be given to the top 3 females and top 3 males in each age division. Age group awards will be mailed after the event.

Exactly. In our mountain bike races - in my area - we do sex and age group categories, but the overall winner IS the overall winner, no matter who crosses first. The fastest person is the fastest person.

I feel this was done in poor taste. Sure, let the Elites have their awards, but the overall winner needs recognition.

It does seem in poor taste to me as well. When you look at other marathons, the elite women are finishing 2:20 and 2:30s. The article says that O'Connell didn't consider herself an elite runner, and that's probably because she usually runs over a 3 hr marathon. Preferred Start, DEFINITELY. Really fast marathon--YES. Elite--that's debatable.

How was she to know that "elite" runner in this marathon meant a 3 hr race? It doesn't seem fair.

Nike ammended their decision. When I looked up the results earlier today, Adrien is listed as the winner.
