I love my apples! I really do!

Now I even have a reason to rub them on my head!

Good stuff! Just reading the article made me want to go out and eat apples. I normally eat one a day, but DH has been buying organic grapes lately (he's the grocery shopper in our household since he's retired). I'll make sure he gets apples next time!

Have a Gala in my lunch box.

A couple of years ago I was up in Mass, and was told by a gal in my office to try to get a fresh picked Macintosh apple. Well our conference paid for a basket full to be delivered every day. They were wonderful, not mealy like the ones I get in the grocery. BUT, I brought one home, didn't eat it for a couple of days, and when I did - it was mealy! Apparently the shelf life of crunchyness is very short. Same as Red Delicious - fresh from the tree, they're wonderful, put them in storage then sell at the grocery - not so delicious.

Which is why I like Galas or Pink Ladies. We get some heirloom apples down from Arkansas at our local farmers market that are mightly tasty too.

The trick to getting crisp apples in the grocery store is to smell them. A crisp apple will have no odor at all. If there's any sweet smell, it's on its way to mealy.

Ha! Not everyone will be using them as a hair restorer! I hope...

We got mysterious local yellow apples from the co-op. I had low expectations, but they are outrageously crisp and perfectly sweet--not cloying. What a nice surprise: Apples in Utah?!

My roommate and I just went apple picking this morning! Nothing like fresh-picked apples and fresh cider.

I love them much more refrigerated. Unfortunately, I shiver more when I rub them on my head

Great riding around here too. And if you're out early in the morning on a weekend, you can smell all the apple pies baking!

A great and easy apple dessert is baked crock pot apples.

Take 4 goodb baking apples (I like the Courtland), peel about half way down and core the apples. Place them in the crockpot.

Now if you don't mind a little extra sugar and sweetness you can stuff a couple of caramels in the cored center then top with a little bit of brown sugar and a dab of butter. You can also sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg too. Add about 1/2 cup of water or apple juice and bake on low for 2-3 hours.

Instead of the caramels you can also alternate brown sugar and butter to fill up the cored area. As it cooks the sugar and butter melt down and form a nice sauce in the bottom of the crockpot that you can spoon over the cooked apples. Yummy!!

I prefer sliced apples to eating them like a horse. I got an apple slicer that is so handy! It looks like a metal pie chart with a circle in the center. You push it down on the apple, and you have perfect apple slices and no core!

I think there's something to the saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

OMG Rollie! I went here one weekend last year and it was a zoo!!! Yes, ride your bike there because going by car is crazy! A nice grade to climb on the way out of El Dorado Hills will give you the calorie deficit required to eat PIE.

Have you guys ever tried Honey Crisp apples?? I am buying them up now and leaving them in my crisper. They are so good. Sliced up and eaten up plain or I sometimes eat em with skim milk ricotta. Oh my.

And the carmel in the middle of an apple in a crockpot. That sounds too good. I better get this foot fixed soon.

We used to have a "pick your own" orchard adjacent to our subdivision...alas, it's now a subdivision

Tulip, I'm with you on the slicer. Right now, I'm slicing one huge gala each morning and taking to work for my mid morning snack. That really HITS THE SPOT!

    Tonight's Meal:
    - One pound of broccoli and carrots
    - Some peanuts (for protein)
    - A chilled gala apple for dessert
