    Exclamation DANGER in Salt Lake

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Uh oh...I discovered something tonight that I think is going to cost me a lot of money. Other Salt Lake valley folks probably already knew about this. I did not. The abbreviated version of the phone call went something like this:

Setting: yellow dials the Backcountry.com gearhead line to ask a gearhead (gh) about the tongue on a particular trail running shoe. Backcountry.com's warehouse is located in a suburb of SLC. Note that Steep & Cheap and Chainlove are both Backcountry.com outlets.

y: hi gearhead. Can you tell me if the tongue on the Merrell Overdrive is gusseted or not?

gh can't answer the question, puts yellow on hold to check with the other gearheads

gh: you know, there isn't anyone here right now that can answer that question. Let me take your email and I'll have someone contact you tomorrow.

y (almost sarcastically): gawd, I wish I could just come down to the warehouse and try the shoes on.

gh: well, you can! We have a full retail outlet, and we can pull anything from the warehouse that you'd like!

y: really? well I think I just kissed all of my disposable income goodbye...

    The End.

I'm in trouble. I'll be venturing over there tomorrow after work.

Being a fellow Utahn, you MUST tell me where this danger lurks, so I can "avoid" it. . . .

It is so nice we have nothing cool in Texas. No Pearl Izumi Outlets, no HUGE Rei (but we do have modest sized ones), no Back Country Outlet. But why oh why is my check book so slim?

I order from them all the time. Why did I never think about there being an actual brick andmortar treasure house?

They're my go to place for all things camping.

It is probably a really good thing that I live no where near SLC. DH and I already spend way to much time going to their websites!

what I've heard is that a good portion of the SLC outdoors community is all dressed in SAC and chainlove gear - lookalikes!

Well, there's also the Patagucci outlet and a Black Diamond store and Kirkham's. I've never noticed the outdoorsy set looking any different than any other city.

Not quite SAC, but my a friend and I showed up at the trailhead last week wearing the exact same short-sleeved wicking T shirt (from Patagucci) and when we pulled out our long sleeved shirts for the windy summit...we pulled out the exact same shirt from Patagucci.

We both had black shorts on, but slightly different. Oh, and we have the same Nathan running pack (not from Patagucci).

I felt silly. I'm sure people thought we were some sort of "team".

    Thumbs up Report!!

OK, the good thing is that they have a very limited supply of "stuff" in the "showroom". You come prepared with the item number(s) and they fetch it for you to try or you can browse their websites on one of the workstations they have set up, write it all down, and they fetch it for you.

This was good because otherwise who knows how much I would have spent!

I was in the market for some trail shoes (more? yes!). I was able to try on brands that aren't otherwise available locally (Oboz, Inov8, higher end GoLite) as well as some models of well-represented brands that aren't available locally.

WOW! I really appreciated the opportunity, and they were super nice & helpful. I will definitely go back. You need to know what you want to make the experience work; it's definitely not a place to just "browse" like the STP outlets.

It's definitely a happy place. Everyone that worked there seemed to be really, really happy. I liked that, too.

Oh, and they had a really nice Pinarello for a great price in the showroom...I didn't know they sold bikes!
