I'm dealing with some of this right now and just before a metric century next weekend. I've learned that next year I'll listen more to my body and less to books and magazines that I was following too closely and not listening when my body said to stop.

About mid August, after the temps dropped a smidgen, I absolutely knew to quit riding for 2 weeks. My body sent that message loud and clear. And when I did get back on the bike, my speeds were better as well as my heart rate. It's hard, though, to not ride when everyone else is.
