    Modify Freddy Fenders

I have a Terry Col de Madeleine that I used for commuting. I put Planet Bike Freddy Fenders on it. They are easy to modify. I bought a small (8 inches long) bolt cutter for not much money at Home Depot. Mount the front fender according to the directions, but remove and save the black caps from the ends of the stays. Now push the fender down the stays until the fender is looking the right distance from the wheel at the stays. Lay a straight edge against the back of the fender and use it to draw marks on the stays with a magic marker. Now use the the bolt cutters to cut the stays at the marks. I think it was something like 2 to 3 inches I removed. Put the stays back through the fender attachments and tighten them down. Finally, put the black caps back on the cut end of the stays so you don't stab yourself. The fender will come lower than usual. I decided that would just replace a mudflap, but if you want to trim the thermoplastic any sheet metal shears will do it. I just checked Planet Bike, the closest they now have is called the "Hardcore" Road or Hybrid.
