There's several types of bar end mirrors on this page - at least one is supposed to work on a mt bike.

I don't use a mirror either, but I certainly cannot turn my head far enough to the left to look fully over my shoulder without also turning my eyeballs! I can see the real need to have a mirror with that problem

I raise up on the seat and look between my legs for people behind me. Funny, it's rare they pass me after that...

I can't use the mirrors attached to a helmet either. All I can see is my glasses, my shoulder, and NEVER the traffic behind me.
I use the big honker mirror that screws into the end of your handlebar. It works just GREAT for me.

I recently tried out a very small, lightweight mirror that attaches with velcro to the end of the handlebars (mtn./hybrid type bars). It worked really well and did not interfere with my grips. My hubby is using my mirror from my previous mountain bike that attaches onto the end also - he loves the bigger mirror. Tomorrow I will try out the new one that attaches to my eyeglasses - takes some getting used to. The ones that attach to the bar ends sound like the ticket for you.
