If you get a "free" fitting from an LBS who thinks you are planning to buy a new bike from them, let them know from the start that you are planning to buy a used bike. Also let them know that you will be giving them your business for repairs and parts, so they don't feel like you are taking advantage of them. If they know you are looking at used bikes, they might have some tips for you on how the older models will fit.
My LBS specializes in older and used bikes, they are a wealth of knowledge about older frames and components!
Wahine had a link to a great website that let you plug in your body measurements and it spit out the bike frame geometries that would suit you best. Armed with those numbers, you can peruse the listed numbers for all sorts of bikes and narrow down the list of likely candidates.
