    Laparoscopic hernia repair ?

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I had surgery a year and a half ago and have since developed an incisional hernia above my navel. I know that the Surgeon is planning to repair it laparoscopically, which is supposed to shorten recovery time.

I know every case is different and I will get activity orders from my Surgeon.... but has anyone here had experience with this ? If so, what can you tell me about what to expect as far as "time off" from the bike and running ?

    ~Thanks.

I underwent laparoscopic surgery last summer to have a softball sized dermoid cyst removed from my abdomen. I was up and walking around the neighbor the next day and back on my bike a week after the surgery. My riding was limited to short rides around the neighborhood but at least I was riding. I was back on the road the next week. I had originally been told I would have to stay off the bike for three weeks.

About 9 years ago, I had my gall bladder removed by laparoscope and three months later developed an incisional hernia just below my sternum.

I had the hernia repaired with internal stitching and two months later, it tore open and I had it repaired again, this time with a hernia patch.

Just 9 months ago, I had the hernia surgically repaired again for the third time with a new patch. This is a simple surgery, but the recovery was very painful to me. The location of my hernia may have been a factor, but it took me at least a week before I could start moving around fairly well and almost a month for the pain to subside.

For the six week follow up with the doctor, she said I could resume all normal activity, just no heavy weight lifting for another month.

I hope all goes well for you and that you recover quickly!
