Hey, that was great! Do you rent those tubes? What river is it? How far did you go?
A large group of families tube/float/kayak on the Buffalo National River in Arkansas every year, but this year we all had crazy schedules and none of us were available on the same weekend. I'm so JEALOUS!
The Buffalo is really remote. I'm wondering what river you were on and how remote it was to civilization, and will it be cold in September? (We're going to be in DE camping and a side trip might not be out of the question.)

Karen,
We used a commercial outfit called River Riders. They are out of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and we tubed the Potomac River. From put-in to take-out was a few miles (maybe?). They say it takes anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on how often you stop. In true TE-DC fashion, we were rather casual in our adventure, and it took us about 3 hours!![]()

2008 Cervelo P2C - Adamo Prologue Saddle
We rode the canal at Harper's Ferry last October and they were still tubing then.
I'm pretty sure it was October.

According to Regina's link above, River Riders does their tubing trips from May through September. And, according to my bikejournal.com, we rode on 10/6/07. Either you saw kayakers on the river that day, or a bunch of late-season Rednecked Yahoos must have been out on their own.
Karen, that area's semi-rural, but definitely not remote. It'd be quite a drive from Delaware, though. If you look on a map, it's the point where MD, VA and WV meet. Check the little inset state map below the topo map here.

"How about if we all just try to follow these very simple rules of the road? Drive like the person ahead on the bike is your son/daughter. Ride like the cars are ambulances carrying your loved ones to the emergency room. This should cover everything, unless you are a complete sociopath."
