I can't explain the nutritional benefits of one over the other but when it comes to flavor and consistency, I'll reach for the trail mix every time. I ate a Special K bar once and... well, it was the opposite of this -->

Whereas trail mix causes this face, especially if it includes chocolate -->

Not for me -- a good mix of carbs, protein, and fat sticks to my ribs and fuels me much better for a ride than pure carbs. Payday bars are a good example. I've also eaten a combo of peanut M-n-Ms and Pepperidge Farm goldfish before a ride, which worked well for me. Yeah, not the most nutritious, but it fueled the ride, and I had plenty of veggies and other good stuff for dinner afterwards.

Depends on the trail mix. Especially in a gas station, heaven knows what you're going to get. Sulfites? Rancid nuts? Chocolate flavored trans fats?

Read the label AND the expiration date for anything you buy in a gas station, and if it doesn't have an expiration date, don't buy it.

If the trail mix has more calories than you want, you don't have to eat it all. (yeah right)
