I don't know if I'm not getting something. The original idea of unions was something different, I know some of the stuff going on with them in the US. Too bad social "ism" never took a real hold in the states?

It's a little secret you didn't know about us women. We're all closet Visigoths.

Saw a great T-shirt flash past me on a bike path in Madison WI one day. Had to put some power into my pedals to catch up and ask where he'd got it. It was from an AFL-CIO convention. Back text said: "United we negotiate. Divided we beg." Not a joke, but worth remembering.

Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.
That was sadly funny
I am a union person. It's my first union job ever and while I understand the appeal and the historical importance, I think I have to side with business most of the time.
Yeah, I know it's an unpopular stance and I will shut up now![]()
Your union is the local, and the local is the members .... is there any way you can get involved at the local level? I know, I know, cuts back on the ride time but sometimes not only helps understand what's going on but can even make them more reasonable.
Well run unions/locals understand that without the company there is no job and well run companies know that with a union it saves them time and $$$, not having to negotiate pay and bennies with every single one of you.
So the two should work together .... except for when it comes to who buys the donuts.
But it's just a joke.

It's largely historical, in the way that the Unions were co-opted by government as the labor movement reached maturity in the US. That allowed corporate interests to pick and choose what issues workers could and could not negotiate for, and paved the way for laws like Taft-Hartley and anti-trust legislation that dramatically limited unions' power to organize workers and to work together.
Of course like any mature bureaucracy, many of the larger unions have gotten too big to be truly representative, but that's not unique to the USA I don't think. On balance, any democracy is better than none IMO.
