Northern california, did not feel it but a coworker was actually talking to someone as it occured. Caller said it was a strong jolt but Southern CA is still there, not floating out to sea.
If this was a real emergency do we all have a back up plan? And please don't rush to the phone, lines could be down if this was a little bit stronger.

I felt it and I'm fine. I'm a night worker so it woke me up a little early. I opened my eyes only to make sure the cat wasn't on the bed. It has been down graded to 5.4 and no real damage has been reported.

I'm in LA, felt it and am fine. I've checked on friends/family and haven't heard of anything bad. I was in court in the middle of a hearing when the room started rolling. I just thought I was dizzy initially. Everyone was pretty calm, except for the judge. She got a little more flustered than usual and ran out of court while the rest of us sat there. It was kind of amusing. A light bulb fell out of a fixture and busted in the hallway, though. Gotta love county buildings. I'll be much happier once I can get out of here and go check on my house and pets. I hope none of them got too freaked out, because they're likely to cause much more damage than an earthquake! I closed on my house a month ago, I've been expecting an earthquake ever since. Hopefully this'll last us for awhile!
I hope everyone else is fine and damage free.
I've heard there have been numerous aftershocks.I hope it doesn't get worse. Sending prayers for SoCal folks.
I work in Pasadena. We felt it, it shook us up, however no damage here. Quake was centered in Chino Hills, CNN is reporting it as a 5.4. Chino Hills is 38 miles east of Los Angeles, which is why people at the beach didn't really feel it. Thanks for your concern.

I hear you, Aly! I've been trying not to think about that since we closed in February.
I was in the middle of treating a patient. I had her compression bandages halfway up her arm when the floor started rolling. Dumbells and supplies were falling off the shelves and my patient kept saying, "I feel dizzy". I had to act totally calm but was FREAKING.
I kept thinking... the inspector said my chimney might fall down in an earthquake!!! But it's still standing and the dogs have calmed down.
Your link to be prepared for emergencies is a great idea. Preparation isn't a big deal, but can make a big difference, if you need to be self sufficient or leave your home.
Now days, with my daughter out of the house, I want to make sure my pets are ok, too. Many of us who post to this site have furry family members, so think about them.
Ok, I haven't added an icon before - this is for the broken light bulb in the courtroom, where the judge ran away!!
My DH was in Lake Forest, parked in a lot waiting for some computer hardware to be brought out to him from a vendor. He said the van started shaking from side-to-side and initially he thought some of the guys he knows there were horsing around and jumping on his rear bumper. He looked....and no one was there.
Otherwise, he said it was ok and no damage that he could see there...

Not that I'm all that prepared, one of my coworkers has pretty much everything a person could need in his car, under the work desk ... at his home. He's Mr. Safety![]()
But one of the simple things you can do is put a box right under the bed; spare set of glasses in my case, slippers, flashlight. Why the slippers? In a big one there's going to be glass so at least a way to get out.
Remind me, I need to change the spare water supply. It's under all sorts of construction tools right now.
That's ok, I could saw my way to the water![]()
