I am also annoyed by the helmet-on-the-handlebar phenomena. Haven't had a chance to say anything yet, but I'm more of an ironic kind: "Nice helmet," I'd say, pointing to the useless device.

What bothers me is people who wear their helmet (probably full of good intentions) while fully exposing their forehead. The helmet just covers the top/back of the head, like a kippa almost. Another useless device! (The helmet, not the kippa.) During my morning commute, I keep thinking about ways I could bring the topic up with fellow commuters, or fantasize about designing a set of post-it "tips for commuters" that I would leave on people's handlebars while parking my bike, which would include stuff like that.

    *sigh*

    I understand you, Mimi.

All the messengers in Providence wear caps instead of helmets. Admittedly, with their tats and piercings and simple single gears they look pretty hip. But then I think, how hip will they look in the brain injury ward with tubes sticking out of them?

I rode a bike for years without a helmet. I remember when my daughter was like, a year old - her in the back in a kid seat, with a helmet on. Me with four bags of groceries on the handlebars, no helmet.

Who am I to judge? I wear a helmet now. But I'm older and more askeered.
I can do five more miles.

Our police dept is coming down hard on people who don't wear helmets....

Saw a nice urban road bike this morning with the following sticker on it:

You would look hotter with a helmet.

    I need one of those.
