Family member escapes major crane accident

Probably less than 10 kms. from where I work, this morning there was a major construction crane (over 10 stories) high that toppled over across the Trans Canada Highway --a freakin' busy, major highway.

Crane was not for our construction project.

I heard it at work, heard Safety Manager gabbing to some guys about it.

Then I found out my partner was on the bus that just barely escaped the cable coming down from that crane!!!! He was on his way to interior B.C., Kelowna for several meetings. (He brought his bike along.)

Bus was stuck for 1/2 hr. (which wasn't bad for hrs. for other cars). Then a deer wanted to run across the highway....

It really is heart-stopping to learn of a close family member,...escaping injury..

I think he is in Kelowna right now. He said it was 30 degrees C.. right??

If he had been hurt....oh...his bus trip is for US.....for cyclists..he's trying to set up a centre for cycling excellence here in B.C....for Canada.

so if you see a guy on folding bike in Westbank area over next few days, he's doing route cycling research in that area... I know he'll end up at Quail's Gate winery restaurant for supper...

The crane operators in British Columbia recently were legislated within the past 6 months onward, to have x hrs. of training, testing and be certified. Remember, not all jurisdictions require this.

Just after they passed the law this early winter, a young man in his late teens or early twenties died when a small crane that he was operating, flipped and fell over a commuter train deck that is being built now.

Oh...then I heard another story..actually when I hitchhiked with a bunch of guys in a truck, from home there was another story of a crane operator in a supertall crane. He passed out inside his crane machine cab, high up in the air....he was on drugs.. Only the fire department could rescue him because only that agency had the vehicle (cherry picker aerial ladder fire trucks), to rescue him.

There are many, many stories of construction accidents worldwide..that members of the public just don't know. Or have not added up all the injuries for 1 large construction project.
