Reading the Harper update made me think how great it would be if the Barak Obama family adopted a shelter dog, regardless who wins the election. Thinking to post an article about the parents promise to the kids and my suggestion, I searched the web, to find that of course others are way ahead of me:

that would be a great idea after he gets elected, but right now they are constantly on the go, what a terrible time to get a new pet!

Not to politicize the thread but I hope they adopt a shelter pet, dog, cat, house rabbit, llama, whatever they want. I hope that pet has a nice long stay at a certain house, oh say, maybe 8 years?

But I think the McCain family would make fine pet parents too. I respect him and his service to the country. Of course he'd adopt a shelter pet, he understands not being able to go home

Either "first pet" they should wait till they are moving in and a certain someone is moving out. The campaign trail is no place for a new pet.

I must agree with Mimi. If I can't devote the time to a pet that it deserves, how can someone in or running for public office? Yeah, they would have someone with dog duty, but that seems pretty empty to me.

Now, if they were planning to get a dog anyways (a la Butch or whatever Clinton's lab's name was or the Bush dog), then yes, they should go for a mutt or a rescue rather than a purebred from a breeder.

mimitabby, good point. I guess the pont of signing a petition urging them to consider it is to bring attention to all the good dogs that need a forever home.
