    Real name: Amy

Where do you live? Durham, NC

Explanation of your handle: It's a 10-year-old in-joke with an even older friend; I've used it as my default handle in so many places by now that I'd be utterly stumped to remember my login if I ever dared to change it.

Explanation of your avatar: Haven't found the right one yet.

    Age (general or specific) 34

    Occupation: geek

Favorite bike: The Specialized Dolce I'll be buying just as soon as payday comes. (edit: nope. make that TOMORROW. Whee!)

    (are we there yet?)

    What's in your stable? Muck.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? fast enough to make the wind go "whoosh" all the way down the hill. I'll report back with more specifics when I get a computer, a ride partner who has one, or a friendly radar gun.

Another picture of yourself or your ride?

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I'm the world's worst liar -- too disorganized to remember the story I told, and too impatient not to share the secret with anyone within hearing range.

Most memorable moment on my bike: A childhood memory -- the first time I went out of the neighborhood I could get to by walking, into whole new places, and realized that the bike wasn't just a way to run around the block until i was out of breath, but a shot at independence.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Every time.

To ramble on further, I'm newly back in love with wheels after a long time off, and I've been enjoying lurking here since I stumbled across it a month or so ago. I'll likely keep lurking until the training wheels are off and I have some more to say, but it's truly fabulous to meet y'all.

    Welcome Spinsis and Greenchick!

Spin I Loved your line about the avatar! Too cute!!

Green: Loved your pix of yourself!!

The sense of humour on this board just keeps me smiling!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"

    on a serious note...

On November 19 I will be doing The El Tour de Tucson century ride. This is my first event, my first everything as a new cyclist. I am riding in memory of my mother, who died last year from leukemia. I decided to make lemonade out of a very lemony experience. If anyone would like to support me in this goal, I would appreciate your donation to The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. My address is: 1348 Midland Ave, 2K
    Bronxville, NY 10708
I am about half way in reaching my goal

    With gratitude...

    Ivy...

I'm so sorry about your mother. My dad has lung cancer, and I know how hard it is to watch a parent be ill with cancer. My heart goes out to you. Good for you for doing the ride!

I can't believe you live on Midland Ave in Bronxville. My mom grew up on Sussex Ave! When my grandparents lived there, Bobby Kennedy was their paperboy for awhile.

    Officially coming out of Lurkdom

    Real name: Payton
Where do you live? Corvallis, OR

Explanation of your handle: Combination of my & hubby's initials, we're both PhDs and both born in 64...voila..drplasma64

    Explanation of your avatar: huh?

Age (general or specific) 40 (gulp!)

Occupation: SAHM and part-time writer/editor for software manuals (having nothing to do with my education, but my brother is a good employer)

Favorite bike: don't know enough to have one

What's in your stable? 1989 (?) Centurion Accordo, waiting for a Trek 7200 FX in a few weeks

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 30 mph, going down hill near my house a week or two ago. For me, that is CRAZY!

Another picture of yourself or your ride? None

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: It's not you, really. I just need space.

Most memorable moment on my bike: hearing "faster mommy, faster" coming from my son on the trail-a-bike behind me.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Riding around Sanibel Island with my kids.

I've been back on the bike for a couple of weeks. I love hearing about all of you gals' accomplishments, it makes me think I can really get better. I did not grow up riding, but bought a bike 16ish years ago for fun and exercise, and promptly moved to a place where I didn't feel comfortable riding. Since then I've always ridden on vacation at my parents, but not regularly. Now I need the exercise, want to set a good example for my kids, love getting out of the house this way. We just moved to an incredibly bike friendly town. I dusted off the old bike, had a tune up and started up again. I really like cycling b/c you actually GO places and see things. Walking is too slow, running to boring, painful and sweaty (for me). I don't mind sweating on bike b/c at least there's always a breeze!

Welcome, Ivy! I'm very close to you (White Plains). If you're interested in group rides, you should give the Westchester Cycle Club (www.westchestercycleclub.org) a try. They have rides at all levels, and you can go on a couple of rides before you decide whether or not you want to join.

OK I guess I should finally do this!

    Real name: Anna

Where do you live? I'm from Ellwood City, PA but I live in Ithaca, NY now while I'm at an undergrad at Cornell.

Explanation of your handle: My name and my number for all sports!

Explanation of your avatar: umm I don't have one

    Age (general or specific) 21

    Occupation: student

Favorite bike: my Rocky Mountain Hammer Race, even though it isn't getting very much play anymore. It's such a hot bike, though.
EDIT -- oooh oooh, I didn't realize I could put my favorite dream bike! I want a Cervelo Soloist Carbon ...it's so sexy and faaaaaaast looking. And while I'm at it, how about a Kona ?Stinky Supreme for the mountains?

What's in your stable? Trek 1000WSD, which is my first road bike, and my Rocky Mountain. Recently was forced to trash my ancient, hand-me-down, beat-up Diamondback Topanga. I loved that bike and rode it for years around high school (boarding school) and college...you never saw a rustier bike, though. No one could salvage it! My Trek is working decently but I'm already looking forward to the next one -- although it will be awhile. The LBS back home pulled a fast one on a new road rider and sold it to me a few sizes too small...so it doesn't fit so well.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 50.5mph, but after 576 miles on the road so far I still haven't found that perfect, wickedly steep hill to bomb...

Another picture of yourself or your ride?

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Goodness, I don't know. I hate lying.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Bombing our steep driveway as a little kid on a banana seat bike, throwing a skidding turn onto the grass on the left every time. Around the 50th time I lost it and I still have the asphalt scars on my knees...my favorite scars, and I think they'll last me forever!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Ooh that's a tough one. Yesterday's TT was pretty damn fun...a bike tour in Morocco with my Mom and sis was pretty fun too.

    Thanks for reading!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Real name: Heidi
Where do you live? Moving to SE Utah in September

Explanation of your handle: My dream is to open a store called eko which stands for environmentally kind options.

Explanation of your avatar: It's an ewok. I loved ewok's as a child.

Occupation: Park Ranger (or at least i was, upon the move to utah i won't be workin' no mo', until i score a job that is)

Favorite bike: Lance's Trek for the Tour -that bike is sooo sweeeet- inbetween dreamin' of getting my feet on that i make do with my Specialized Rockhopper and Sequoia.

What's in your stable? See above

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? just got hooked up to a cyclocomputer - got up to 26.6 on a flat- smoked my husband that day.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Turning my joblessness into a career with bikes. Oh, that's a mental picture you probably meant a real pic. Sorry, don't have any.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: When I was 16 I told this total hunk I was 19 and in college. We dated the whole summer but when it was time to go back to high school I confessed. He took it well.

Most memorable moment on my bike: Every moment I've had on her, riding in Sedona, Arizona.

Most fun ever had on a bike? To tough to choose, but smokin' my husband the other day sure felt good.
