Oh disappointment, I thought I was going to hear all about your celebrations over there!
Maybe you don't celebrate it that much?

Perhaps they're still hungover?![]()
We're all too busy celebrating to be online!
No, I've had a really busy weekend, traveling, etc. On the 4th we were at my son's home about 150 miles from here. We didn't drive out to the lake to watch the fireworks. I was delivering to my son the Schwinn Le Tour that I rebuilt for him. It was a surprise, and he was SO thrilled. He and my other son rode bikes all around their little town square (where there was live music going on), while I hung out with my grandson. It was a low-key 4th.
Thanks for the well wishes!
Karen
I stayed home and watched fireworks on TV
With the dogs.

As it turns out neither day's fireworks were rained out, but it rained up until about 8:30 p.m. both days, and neither DH nor I had any interest in standing out in the rain waiting for the show.
So we stayed home and fixed frozen veggie burgers on the indoor grill. At least the potato salad was homemade (farmer's market new potatoes, homemade mayo, yum).

I was up in the small town my grandparents used to live in - have an aunt and a bunch of cousins who still live there. Family reunion was in my aunt's back yard. The evening of the 4th, we went to the town's celebrations which were a throw back to the WAY past - politicians giving speeches, those running for office were pressing the flesh, blue grass band played, church choir sang, Chamber of Commerce grilled hot dogs and sold sodas, and finally the volunteer fire department put on the fireworks show over the river. Was a pretty good fireworks show.
Meanwhile back at the house I was staying in (my aunt's "camp" - single wide trailer - down by the lake), my normally calm while inside dog, was trying to break out of the bathroom. I hadn't locked her in there, but apparently while wandering around, the door closed behind her. She managed to pull the door trim off the walls in her escape attempts. So saturday afternoon I got to do a repair![]()

Thanks for the well-wishes, Clock! Think of how different both our lives would be if we'd never fought for, or lost our bid for independence. I wonder what it would've been like...
I LOVE the 4th- mostly because I love our country, and partly because I teach American History and just LOVE every aspect of early American history. It's so interesting (and the John Adams mini series on HBO was just wonderful)!
We spent the 4th riding our bikes- is there any other way? DH did his first century, and I did 85 (I wimped out on the 100 since I'd just done 65 the day before). It was a ton of fun! We were too tuckered out to go to the hill behind our house to watch the fireworks, so we just went to bed early and listened to the booms outside our bedroom window and watched them on t.v. (it's kinda the same).

the 4th of july is not my favorite holiday. It was fun to see other cyclists out with flags on their bikes!!!!
but what ISN'T fun is the fireworks that people set off illegally here, night after night and especially on the 4th. They wait until we are in bed then they go out and BOOOM BOOM BOOM. On the 4th it was until 3am!!!! and then someone got revenge and got up at 6 am and let some off. Gee, thanks. It's nice when they get bored or run out of fireworks. I shouldn't complain, they used to shoot guns off instead.
ON the other hand, I live on a short dead end street. We have all nice neighbors and had a picnic. A multicolor multiethnic picnic! it was wonderful.
People who have been driving by each other for 20 years finally spoke to each other and shared each other's food. That's what We did for the 4th of July.
It rained on the morning of the fourth here, so we took a walk and then went to friend's for a BBQ. When we got home around 9, we watched the Pops on TV, the fireworks, and caught a few glimpses of the fireworks from the neighboring town.
I live in the place where it all started, so the 4h of July is really celebrated here. We are a real "small town" kind of place, so there's a parade, etc. I never really felt like it was the 4th of July when I lived in AZ.
I did wear red, white, and blue on Friday and Saturday when I was at parties. I feel a little more patriotic since my son is in Iraq, but generally, I do not go for big displays of this stuff. But, I also love early American history.
A friend of mine from across the pond sent to me that said to the effect.
"We have no hard feelings. Happy Birthday USA, love mum"
Cheers for all the replies, that was good, everybody did things very differently, much like when we celebrate things over here.
I am one of those who does not have very much family, so it must be so good to have a 'whole bunch' of cousins etc and all meet up.
Thank you for taking the time to tell me.
