What would you value this bike at?

Klein Quantum, 2001-2002. Has Shimano 105 components (all). Owner says he rode it twice.

It feels really nice, the fit seems to be great for me, but the fellow wants $900 for it. I know these bikes used to start at 1700$ but given the age and all, what would you be willing to pay for this bike? Is he about right or can I talk him down, y'think?

all i can suggest is get on Craig's list and do a global search and see if you can find any others. The fact that it's hardly used (you can ascertain this by a careful inspection) makes it worth quite a bit more than a bike that has been really used, you know?
Do you like the bike? Make an offer. If he doesn't like your offer, you can still pay the asking price.

I like the bike. I took it around the neighborhood, up a few hills - it had no problems and my little snap-crackle-pop knee had no problems with it.

I have found others - they range from well-ridden at $700 to the lightly ridden at 800-850. I'm thinking $875 is fair. My only concern is the Shimano 105s - is that a little dated now? I know components change so fast and it costs a pretty penny to upgrade to say, Ultegra.

I don't think he's that off on price - maybe worth slightly less (i.e. 800). I sold a 1999 Raleigh less than 2 years ago (very light use), but with full Ultegra (so better components, way less good frame) for $700.

I know it's not a road bike but I sold my XT/LX mtb that was two years old for $600 and I upgraded it with an Easton EC 90 carbon seat post and bar, Force 90 stem, Fizik Vitesse saddle, Wipperman conneX 920 Teflon coated chain, and sweet IRC racing tires.

To put it in perspective my roommate is trying to sell a Cannondale 900, full Ultegra and upgraded wheelset, with all accessories for $700. It's only a few years old and has the head shock and such. He'd take $600 so I think that kind of money for something with 105 that is that old ain't worth it. 1991 105 is like this years Wal-Mart bike components. At least that's the way my bike gurus have explained it to me.

I can't imagine that was ever a $1700 dollar bike. I've priced out full 105 road bikes in the neighborhood of $900-$1200. Metal prices are much worse now then they were back in '91.

I say let the guy stew until he's reasonable, $400-$500, or keep looking. I saw an '89 Bianchi on Craigslist here that was Campy Chorus for $300, but it was too big for me otherwise it would be miiiine!!!

edit: okay I misread, thought that was '91 not '01. Even still, full 105 bikes new are not much more than that. What size do you need? I'm sure the roommate would ship you the crack and fail for less than that and it's Ultegra.

Well I spoke to the LBS where the bike was originally sold. The guy I tend to talk to most, a totally honest fellow, thought about it and said offer 800$ which is kinda where I was headed. His brother who runs the shop said oh no, try $600. I offered $800 cash and guy turned that down flat sooooo. No new bike for me today.

Smurf, I'm looking for a 54cm bike - that seems to be a great fit. If your roomie's bike happens to be that size, I'll gladly have a looky.
