my grandmothers were thelma and iola. my mom had an aunt ophie and thats what i think of when i see zen's avatar. no squeeze box that i know of . . . i cant see my little sunday school kindy-gardners - brooklyn, madison, jordan, morgan, sidney, chloe, alexia et al - as grammas!!

The funny thing is, we're laughing at the names of people two or three generations older or younger than we are. We're not thinking about how our/our friends' great-grandchildren are going to be laughing at names like Marie, Laura, Susan or Wendy No, we have classic names that are perpetually in fashion and no one will ever find them laughable.

My southern grandmother's name was Dora Ethel. My Irish grandma's was Helen Iona. My mom's is Helen Betty.

Helen IS a classic name, though.

Mine is Karen Ann. I always wanted to be called Ann, and spell with the E at the end. :-/

Most of my older relatives have nicknames that are used everyday...
I had an Aunt Dodo. Her name was Josephine, but a cousin tried to say "JoJo", but it came out "DoDo" and it stuck.
Same thing with an Aunt DeeDee. Her name was Angela, "Angie" became "DeeDee".
Then...my dad had cousins Foots and Scars (he was Oscanio - Italian version of Oscar, I think.) No idea where Foots came from! .

My middle name is Anne and when I asked my mother why, assuming it was after her mother who was named Anna but called Annie, she told me it was from Anne of Green Gables, her favorite book as a child. In that book, the character refers to herself as "Anne, Ann with an E". So my friends often called me that, saying my middle name was Anne, Ann with an E. Long middle name.


My mother was named Edna. God rest her soul it was gladly a name that died with her in my family. I joke that when I go to heaven and meet her mother my first comment will be - what were you thinking? (Mum's sister was named Muriel, that just adds to my intrigue). My grandmothers were Annie and Bridget, both very fine names I would have been happy to carry on. Just not Edna.

My middle name is Anne (note the E lolol). I was named after my Aunt Anne, and then passed it on to my daughter. Both my grandmother's were named Margaret, as is my mom, and I really wanted to name my daughter that, but hubby thought it was too old fashioned. I love that name, though....

My grandma is Pansy Lorreen. My mother Pansy Jean. My great-grandmother Pansy Ellen. Oddly my great-grandma hated her name and went by Ellen. It was one thing she could remember in the late stages of Alzheimers, she would curse anyone in the home calling her Pansy.

The doctor that delivered me also delivered my mother and asked if I would be Pansy the fourth. My mother so eloquently replied "Hell no."

I also have aunts Buela and Bernis (Aunt Bun).

Zen's avatar makes me laugh, she doesn't look like a Pansy though.

(& I got Grace as my middle name, which was horrible thru school...but now that Grace is having a come back ....I like it!)
