We may actually be safer as a result of the high price of gas:

    I love bike cops.

I got caught jay-walking by two bike cops. Didn't hear them coming, had no idea they were anywhere near me. Excellent! I was so excited to see how effective bike cops were, that I didn't even mind that I got caught being an idiot.

Cops on bikes rock! More is better!

The chief of police in our little village rides a bike on duty in the summer.

totally not bike related, but i saw a segment on the news about a town that's using a golf cart to patrol the town because of high gas prices.

It's always amazed me that cities don't use "mounted" patrol more whether it is on a bike, horse or golf cart - and not based on gas prices. Having the officer outside that metal cage makes him (or her) more approachable and effective. All can go where the car can't (to varying degrees).

Actually, the guy who rides the golf cart said exactly that. In the car he's the car, in the cart he gets to talk to people in the community and ultimately do his job better.

In Seattle, people actually donate $$$ so that we can continue to have mounted police.

In San Antonio, we have lots of cops on bikes. I saw a bike rack while walking on one of our main downtown street and there were about 30 bikes. Then I realized it was the bike rack in front of the police station and they were all police bikes.

Cops on bikes -- what a great thing!
